Friendly House to Hold Arizona’s Premiere Hispanic Social Event, Fiesta de Friendly House Friendly House will host its annual signature fundraising event, Fiesta de Friendly House, on Friday, October 23, 2009. Open to the public, it will be held at Corona Ranch, 29th Avenue and Baseline Road. Touted as an extraordinary evening of culinary delight, guests are offered an exquisite selection of wines and beers along with a sampling of some of the valley’s finest food and desserts from local restaurants. Supporters can bid on items during the silent auction. The evening concludes with its “Baile de Amigos” featuring live entertainment by STR8UP. The popular event attracts approximately 1,500 people from throughout the valley. Presented by Food City, other sponsors include Arizona Federal, AT&T, General Dynamics, Humana, Naff & Associates, SRP and Wells Fargo. Media and promotion partners include CBS 5, The Arizona Republic, Telemundo Arizona, Latino Future Magazine, La Voz, MEGA 104.3 FM, The Vibe 95.2 FM, LatinoNow.com, TV 44, Blender Marketing Group, Garner Communication, and South Mountain Villager. All guests must be at least 21 years of age. Admission is $50 per person and includes food, drink, entertainment and the “Baile de Amigos.” Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. Friendly House, one of the leading health and human service organizations in the United States, was established in 1920 to assist new immigrants with acquiring literacy skills and citizenship. Today, it remains committed to offering quality programs in the areas of adult education, workforce development, family counseling, social services, parenting, home care for the elderly and disabled, immigration, and youth services. It also operates Academia del Pueblo Charter School.

LAVEEN PAVILIONS AND
Mark your calendars for the upcoming October events! The Laveen Pavilions Shopping Center, located at the northeast corner of 35th Avenue and Southern, rolls out the Silent Breeze 2nd annual Car Show on Sunday, October 18th for a “day of display”. Then on Saturday, October 24th it’s time to bring the community together to discuss crime prevention. This important event will include individuals from many community service groups and organizations; we invite YOU to join us. Keep Laveen Safe! We will discuss ways to work together to prevent crime as a community in an effort to preserve safety, properties values and maintain a positive environment in the Laveen area. Trick or Treat! We are celebrating Halloween on Saturday, October 31st at the Shopping Center, so dress up the kids and bring them out for a day of carnival rides and free candy during our “Trunk or Treat” event, co-sponsored by CrossWalk Church. There will be cars decked out in the spirit of Halloween and the kids can trick or treat from car-to-car and store-to-store to collect candy while showing off their costumes. Prizes will be given for best costume.
The Laveen Village Center, located at the southwest corner of 35th Avenue and Southern, will host a carnival from Thursday, October 29th through Sunday, November 1st! There will be free Halloween candy available for the kids on Halloween day! On Sunday, November 1st, we will have a unique Sports Equipment Swap Day. Kids can trade in old sports gear to get the equipment they need? Baseball glove, a larger helmet, football pads. This event includes a carnival, food, crafts table, face painting, free haircuts, vision testing, eye glass drive, goodie bags, fun financial info for kids, and much more.

We would like to start by thanking our Council Persons from Districts 7 & 8 and our Mayor, Phil Gordon and the many employees of the City of Phoenix for their support. When we first published the “Villager,” the South Mountain Village Festival of Thanksgiving held every November had been around for 22 years, this year we celebrate its 37th. Anniversary. Please plan on attending some of the great events we have planned. We have recently partnered with the Laveen Community Council to participate in some of our events.
We thought we would attempt to list some of the changes that have happened in the last 15 years since the “Villager” first became a part of our lives. The creation of two-world class golf courses, the Raven and the Legacy. The YMCA on Olympic Drive, thanks to Mel & Mary Martin. The Cesar Chavez Library & City of Phoenix Cesar Chavez Park. The advent of the Aquila Golf Course and Bougainvillea Golf Club. The opening of the Secret Garden in the historic Strong Residence thanks to Dave and Nancy Mata. The expansion of the Farm at South Mountain thanks to Wayne Smith and his partners and staff. The opening of the Target, I-HOP, two Applebee’s, three Starbucks, two Ace Hardware stores, two Fry’s, Coldstone Creamy, Gallagher’s, Contours, 2 Tutor Time’s, TCF, Compass, Chase, Wells Fargo and US Bank banks, Lowes, Home Depot, Ono Hawaiian BBQ, Wal Mart, two Curves, Native New Yorker, Food City, Tesco Fresh & Easy Grocery Store, Raptor Guitars, Wal Mart Neighborhood Market Place, the Hat Rack Restaurant & Bar, Sundance Studios, Jamba Juice, Chipotle, Pet Smart, Fat Daddy’s, Yo Mamas, Maryln’s Fish & Chips, Safeway, Arizona Humane Society Thrift Store, EAGLE School. SABIS International School, Arizona Federal Credit Union, the Keller Williams Lifestyle Realty including the Carlie Back Team, the Neighborhood Resource Building that is home to NSD staff and the Police Department and many more new and exciting place’s to shop. The construction of about 60,000 new homes, about three Loft products and several new apartment complexes. Hundreds of infill houses and affordable homes and 100,000 new residents.
Also still to come in the near future, a new Ruby Tuesday’s, Fitness Center, Oreganos, Taco Bell, Danny’s Car Wash, Super Center Car Wash, and a Salvation Army thrift store, the expanded Phoenix Ranch Market Shopping Center with a new and fresh look. The celebration of the South Mountain Community Collage 30th. Anniversary, The future looks bright and positive for our Village. We can only imagine what will happen in the future. We sincerely hope that the “Villager” has played a significant part in making our Village’s a better place to live.
