The Historic Farm at South Mountain

“A drive down an unpaved memory lane”

South Mountain boasts a hidden gem sought after by those looking to unwind and unplug from the fast-paced lifestyle of city living and reconnect with nature and community. More importantly, the Farm at South Mountain reminds us all to pause and appreciate our neighborhood’s special place in the Valley’s history and acknowledge the efforts to preserve an idea conceived by a true Arizona Garden_SmallResvisionary.  As you turn into the easily-missed gravel entrance of the humble property, you’re instantly surrounded by a handful of cozy 1920′s cottages that house several locally-owned and independent businesses. In fact, the entire property was part of a larger land purchase by Phoenix icon Dwight Heard (of the Heard Museum) who envisioned a community where people would use the land to support themselves and each other. In the early 1900′s he divided the land and sold the parcels with the intent of promoting self-sustainability, going so far as to include a cow and fifty chickens with each purchase.

The original vision of sustainability continues further down the gravel path as your enter a canopy of pecan trees planted in the mid-1940′s that have yielded bountiful harvests for the community for more than 60 years. Today, they define and shield the verdant oasis from the city skyline, opening only to allow branch-framed views of South Mountain.  Fragrant blooms and freshly tilled earth lead you to the green core of the Farm where 1.5 acres of organic gardens express the unwritten history of the property. Farmer Maya Dailey’s produce garden flourishes from naturally-Family_SmallResenriched soil deposits dating back to its ancient history as a riverbed. The flowers also grown here remind us of the stretched miles of swaying Japanese flower fields that once skirted the base of the mountain.

A quick stroll down the mulchy pathways and you arrive at the rear of the Farm property where a collection of quaint cottages and a converted farmhouse proudly showcase the culinary craftsmanship and imagination of local artists. The nationally-recognized Quiessence Restaurant and the locally-celebrated Artist’s Studio both contribute to the founding principles of Heard’s vision of economic sustainability.

In fact, current Farm owner A. Wayne Smith carries the torch of Heard’s dream by encouraging all the farm businesses to thrive and support one another.  “It’s simple,” says Smith. “I tell everyone here you’ve gotta focus on delivering a good product and extending excellent service. That’s what has made this property great.”

But the Farm’s impact and contributions are not limited to the property’s borders.  Thanks to grower Maya Dailey, The Farm’s superb produce can be found on the menus of the Valley’s most elite restaurants, enjoyed by students in local schools and is available at many public markets across the city.  Quiessence Restaurant’s cuisine has earned international acclaim and spotlight from Food & Wine Magazine, Gourmet, Bloomberg, Arizona Highways and numerous awards from local publications.

With thriving businesses built on decades of responsible stewardship of the land and a visionary promise, Phoenix’s hidden gem is destined to make history far into the future. Current owner Wayne Smith wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I just sure hope Mr. Heard would be proud.”

Ed Pastor Nov 09

Ed Pastor

Ed Pastor

As part of November’s celebration of Veteran’s Day, I want to take this opportunity to salute America’s veterans, service men and women and their families. We are in debt to our men and women in uniform for the courage and bravery that they exhibit in battle and we recognize the sacrifices of their families.

I also want to use this opportunity to bring light to the new GI Bill for the 21st Century passed by Congress last year, which is considered the most extensive educational assistance program authorized since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. Educating our nation’s veterans is certainly a commitment we should keep to our courageous troops for their service to our country. They have earned the right to a bright future when they return home, and this bill restores the promise of a full, four-year college education. The original GI Bill launched millions of families onto a path to achieve the American dream, and my hope is that this bill will do the same or better.

On May 1, veterans were able to start applying for a certificate of eligibility for the new college benefits at the VA website, and these benefits started August 1, available to an estimated 2.1 million veterans.  The maximum benefit allows every eligible veteran, service member, Reservist and National Guard member an opportunity to receive an in-state undergraduate education at a public institution at no cost. Provisions include payments for tuition and fees, housing, and a stipend for books and supplies. Benefits are payable for training on or after Aug. 1, 2009. The tuition and fee benefit is paid directly to the school.  Some of the details for the program are below, but I encourage you to visit this website under the Department of Veterans Affairs for more information and to access an online application: www.GIBILL.va.gov.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for benefits if you have completed at least 90 days of active duty service on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and were honorably discharged. It also covers individuals discharged with a service connected disability after 30 days who were honorably discharged. The benefits are correlated on a sliding scale to years served. To receive full benefits, you must have served on active duty for three years.

Do I need to claim my benefits before a certain date?

You generally have 15 years following release from active duty to use the benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Can I transfer Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to my spouse or children?

If you are a member of the Armed Forces on Aug. 1, 2009, the Department of Defense may offer you the opportunity to transfer benefits to your spouse or dependent children. While rules on transferability are still being finalized, for most service members, to transfer benefits to a spouse, you must have served six years and reenlist to serve at least four more. To give education benefits to a child, you must have served for at least 10 years.  More up-to-date information is available at www.GIBILL.va.gov.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE OFFERS TWO NEW HEALTHCARE TRAINING PROGRAMS

In an ongoing effort to create new career opportunities for Valley residents, South Mountain Community College (SMCC) is proud to announce two new health care job training programs.

As the baby boomer generation ages, health care will continue to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the US economy.  SMCC, in partnership with Boston Reed College, is now offering courses to train individuals to become Pharmacy Technicians and Clinical Medical Assistants. This training will give students the tools they need to find entry level positions in this stable and lucrative field.

Pharmacy Technicians help pharmacists package or mix prescriptions, maintain client records, refer clients to the pharmacist for counseling, assist with inventory control and purchasing, and collect payment and coordinate billing.

Clinical Medical Assistants help physicians carry out procedures, care for patients, perform basic lab tests and administer medications.

The cost of the training is $2,595, including books and supplies, and financial aid is available.  Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., beginning December 1, 2009.  The Clinical Medical Assistant program continues through March 11, 2010, while the Pharmacy Technician program runs through April 15, 2010.  The programs also include externships (on-the-job training) of 120 to 160 hours in the Phoenix area.  The Pharmacy Technician curriculum includes materials to prepare students for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination.  For more information, call the SMCC Career and Technical Education Office at 602.243.8034, or e-mail smcc@smcmail.maricopa.edu.

Health Tips OCT 09

Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 9, 2009

5 Health Tips to Teach Good Eating Habits in Children

The growth of a child depends upon many factors including a loving, nurturing home life, adequate imaginative playtime, positive social interaction, good, restful sleep and eating foods that help to build a strong body, mind and spirit.

1.  Breast milk for Babies – giving babies the best start nutritionally is by breast feeding.  Breast milk is the perfect food for infants as it contains the best proportions of fats, carbohydrates and proteins which change in their proportion as the infant grows to support the growing process.  High amounts of essential fatty acids (EFAs) like DHA are found in breast milk which support brain development.  Substances found in mother’s milk aid in strengthening the infant’s immune system to help protect the child from allergies and chronic disease.

2.  Meal Time is Calm Time - a meal environment that is calm with the presence of a lit candle, saying a blessing or holding hands before the meal or singing a song all add to the specialness of enjoying a family meal together.  Eating without the television and choosing to not answer the phone at mealtimes helps to ensure the calmness.

3.  Wholesome Meals – Choose to cook with organic foods as much as possible.  Do not feed a child anything with preservatives, artificial colors or flavors and limit sugar, dairy and spicy foods.  Give younger children small meals so that they can digest a proper amount of food for their smaller bodies.  Encourage children to drink small amounts of water at meal times.  Drinking too much at meal times dilutes the body’s own digestive juices making it more difficult for the body to digest the food.

4.  Children as Chefs – One way to help a finicky eater is by having the child help with the making of a meal.  For younger children it can begin at the grocery store where the child helps place the foods in the shopping cart and then at home it is the washing of fruits or vegetables, setting the table, pouring water, choosing which cloth napkin to use or tearing up lettuce leaves for the salad. If a child feels that she has been a part of the meal making process, she may be more apt to eat the meal.

5.  Dragon Soup and Trees – Create playful names for food that will put a smile on the child’s face and engage them in eating the nourishing food.  Broccoli are trees, bananas are monkey food or crescent moons, an apple cut in half horizontally has a magical star in it (the seeds), and naming soups, stews or salads with a fairy tale character in mind helps the child to relate the food to something that they already love.  Have fun!

Amar’e Stoudemire Gives Book Bags to Roosevelt Students

Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 9, 2009

Amar’e Stoudemire donated 300 new book bags to the Roosevelt School District.  The National Basketball Association star and member of the Phoenix Suns team visited Martin Luther King Elementary School to personally hand out the bags to the students.  Staples generously provided the school supplies for the Amar’e Advantage Program.  Local Phoenix store managers Jaime Hallaway, Jennifer Caruso, Lance Hyden, and Jason Schlei helped pack the bags full of pencils, erasers, notebooks, markers and many other fun items.  They also delivered the bags to the school cafeteria along with the assistance of Staples District Manager Greg Coates and Staples Executive Administrator Midi Brown.

After the students finished their lunch, Principal Michael Turner welcomed Mr. Stoudemire and several special guests, including Roosevelt Superintendent Mary Beyda.  Arizona State Representative Cloves Campbell, Jr., and Phoenix City Councilman Michael Johnson were present along with 3 members of the Roosevelt School District’s Governing Board:  Betty Thompson, Jimmie Munoz, and Norma Munoz.

Before handing out the book bags, Amar’e spoke to the children about the importance of education.  He explained that “reading, writing, and arithmetic are the keys.  Your future success will be based on how much you practice these skills now.  They are the most important things to learn.”  He also encouraged the kids to become great by working hard, listening to their teachers, and doing better in school.  Mr. Stoudemire concluded his remarks by using himself as an example:  “I am still going to classes and learning new things, even though I play basketball.”

While they were waiting to get their new book bags, many students guessed what was inside.  Some thought there might be basketballs, while others speculated that the bags were filled with glitter.  Upon seeing the children’s excited faces, Mr. Stoudemire commented that he wished he had this kind of opportunity when he was going to elementary school.  “That is the whole reason I give back to the community now, to make things better for these students,” he explained.

After all of the students received their new book bags filled with school supplies, Roosevelt School District Governing Board President Betty Thompson thanked Mr. Stoudemire:  “We are so grateful for your support of public education in our community.”

Roosevelt Student Authors & Artists Oct 09

Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 9, 2009

All 3 of these poems were awarded national “golden keys” by Scholastic magazine and the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.  During the 2008-9 school year competition only 1,000 out of 140,000 submissions received this distinction.  These students attend C.J. Jorgenson and worked with Mr. Ryan Tritch, their teacher, in the “Unheard” writing club, which also publishes a local literary magazine.

Is It Our Fault?

By Jovanna Figueroa

The roar of the airplanes as they soar,

Technology,

The elegant architecture,

Humans,

Both things great,

But nothing compares to the purity of

Nature.

As I sit here on this beautiful metamorphic rock,

I see the surrounding mountains.

They create a trench

These mountains are powerful warriors,

Where only peace and love are allowed in.

A bee buzzes by gently,

It sits on a rock,

A wisdom filled rock,

With no facials or make-up,

All natural.

I look out,

Trying to find a world with no war,

With no destructive decisions,

A world without hate,

Without jealousy,

Where desire doesn’t overpower,

An Earth without pollution,

Without global warming,

Without humans.

Animals would run freely,

Plants would grow over wildly,

Land would increase secretly,

But our curious Earth would have never known the power of Love!

Here, the sky can’t meet the ground,

A big murky streak blocks their touch,

All our dumb decisions,

Our apathy,

Our lonely hearts desperate to be heard and in need of love.

We are vulnerable to desire,

Our first impulse betrays us,

And we destroy.

Here in Arizona, There in Jalisco

I felt immersed in shadow, in the darkness

And loneliness. Summoned by everything and

Everyone.  In a war between relaxation,

Time, and joy to myself.  It was like I was working in fields,

The bosses yelling out, ―work, work, work!  Don’t stop!  No time

For chit-chat!  Go!  Go!

But then I woke, saw myself in calm,

Warm sunsets.

Even the birds looked down at the earth,

Forecasting

A cool evening.  A life,

That, like the expressions on one’s face, is ever-

Changing, can be treasured as memories

Unique and valuable.

Is just.

Just afraid

Just boring

Shoot

Even exciting,

But you get the picture

It’s not how,

But what;

Not what,

But how.

Get the picture?

Don’t be fooled

Take that scarf

Off

Your eyes

And see the world

As it truly is.

Face it with a bear

Ask Grandpa Oct 09

Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 9, 2009

ag

My dad lost his job, the bank took our house and we had to move in with my Aunt.  Now my parents are mad all the time and I want to move out, but I’m only fourteen.  What can I do?  Jeremy Q.

There are dozens of “feel good” sayings that come to mind Jeremy and you’ve probably heard some of them.  But none of them do much to solve the problem you and hundreds of others are facing.

I hope you can set your personal feelings aside for a moment and consider the agony your folks are experiencing.  They probably worked very hard to get a home to raise you in and to lose that investment and the memories that went with it would devastate anyone.  Losing a job equates to more than income, it is a major slap to a person’s self-esteem.  These issues and others associated with them can cause marital discord.  If you will try to understand these monumental problems your Mom and Dad are facing, the solution will present a personal challenge to you as a man.  Your piece of the equation needs to be one as part of the team.  Show your folks that you love them and appreciate whatever efforts they are making and have made.  Chip in and help with whatever you can.  Let your Aunt know how much her generosity means to you, many people don’t have anyone to take them in.  Forget moving out, that’s the sissy way and it won’t help your family.  Church and School counselors can help if you ask.  That’s a tall challenge, Jeremy, but I bet you will look back one day and be proud you had the guts to take it.  Good Luck.  GP
