Restaurant Review Dec 09

Duner’s Pizza, Another Great Restaurant
As soon as I walk through the doors of Duner’s Pizza, I smell the freshly oven-baked pizza and the aroma of the hot wings. It is an inviting smell to a feast of carbs! I initially had in mind ordering one of their delicious chicken Cesar salads, but as I placed my order, my brother
who joined me in the experience looked at me confused and said, “Jackie, you’re at Duner’s, you HAVE to order pizza!” He was right.
Duner’s is a family owned restaurant with three locations around the Valley. My brother, Eloyd and I visited the location in the Laveen Village on 51st Avenue and West Baseline Road that has been in business for three years now. From the get-go, the experience was pleasing. As mentioned, the aroma of the freshly baked food pierced the nostrils and prepared us for an appetizing pizza and wings dinner. I ended up ordering their personal sized pepperoni pizza and Eloyd ordered the 12-piece hot wing deal. With that and two drinks, dinner was less than 18 dollars! At the end, we even had a few slices of pizza left over. This place is welcoming to families who enjoy sports, since the dining area is surrounded by three HD flat screen TV’s always on sports updates and booths that look like sports car leather seats. The Duner’s Deals are always an option such as the Dinner for $25 including a one large one toping pizza, 25 wings, and a two-liter soda. Now, if you are interested in ordering from home, a delivery service is also available.
Pizza, wings, and salads do not make up the entire menu. A selection of 10-inch submarine sandwiches served cold or hot also add to the assortment in the Duner’s menu at prices ranging from only $5.95 to $7.95. Aside from their great menu and amazing prices, their customer service is excellent, which is what I look for in a great dining experience. Friendly people, such as Raul Gracia welcome you to a pleasant dining experience of pizza, wings, or even a fresh chicken Cesar salad. It was around 5 o’clock in the afternoon on a Wednesday and we were one of three families dining-in that evening. From the time we ordered to the time our food was served, we only waited 10-15 minutes. Not bad in my book!
So when you are looking for great hand-tossed, oven-baked pizza and hot wings in a friendly environment around the Laveen area, Duner’s Pizza is the place to be. The 51st Ave and Baseline location is open seven days a week, Sunday through Wednesday from 10AM to 8:00PM and Thursday through Saturday from 10AM to 9:30PM. Now, if you decide to stay in for the night the number to call is (602) 237-1507 for their delivery service.

Lowmans Arizona Funeral Home
“Christmas In Heaven”
We hope this article finds all of you enjoying this Holiday Season and would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. It’s hard to believe that this special time of year is already presenting itself. It feels, at times, as though it was just “yesterday” that I tucked away all of our Christmas decorations. For some of us, this time of year, in particular, can feel overwhelming, especially if someone in our lives is no longer physically present. My prayer for those of you that may be experiencing this would be that your heart can feel their love for you and that God will give you the strength and return the joy of this special time of year to you. All we each have to do is to open our hearts and minds to receive it. When it comes right down to it, it is because of Him that we honor and celebrate this time of year.
Sadness can zap a phenomenal amount of energy from us and with the loss of a loved one it can be difficult to overcome. With the loss of my father, I am learning to embrace and truly cherish all of the memories I have been blessed with. This year I’m a little excited because for the first time ever, I believe that my Daddy is going to be able to witness my “labor of love” that I assemble every year.
Over several years I have been collecting and expanding a Christmas Village I put together every year at Christmas time. To me, it is so—— magical that I can’t hold back my tears upon its completion. Watching it turns back the years and I feel like a small child in awe. My parents have never seen this “village”. I put in literally 100+ hours and it encompasses our entire dining room. It began small enough to place on my kitchen window sill. It is complete with houses, a ski lodge and lift, wildlife, 2-3 skating rinks, a park, shopping area, 2 churches, each displaying lighted nativity scenes, children playing, throwing snowballs, sledding, running with their dogs, holding a garage sale, as well as cats lounging and stretching, and raccoons checking out the trash cans. There is a street with the local post office, bank, and fire department, along with a neighborhood complete with houses and yards decorated for the holidays, Santa’s sleigh atop of one of the homes, as well as tree houses and wood piles, and snowmen. There are figurines hustling in the shopping area complete with a toy store and other shops contained in a city. There are walkways, carved styro-foam mountains, and a trolley that runs the length of the city. There is even a moon that glows, along with fiber optic trees, as well as so many types of trees. It is a miniature city in motion and I, along with those I am blessed to share it with, find it to be quite magical. There is so much to see. But this year, I truly believe that my Daddy will be able to see what I’ve been working on for years and the joy that it brings me.
I know that it is because of God’s grace that I am able to embrace this feeling. I’m not sure how those deal with loss if they don’t have their faith, but I do know that mine has helped me to endure and comfort me and feel the blessings of family and love.
I have shared the following Christmas poem with you on two other occasions throughout the years, so please forgive my selfishness as I run it again for me and my family this year. It has comforted so many. So please indulge me and may it also give you peace. Because of my parents great faith, it is extremely comforting to me and I pray that it brings comfort to my mom and those of you have lost a loved one.
My First Christmas In Heaven
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular; please wipe away the tear,
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,
But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here.
I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond descriptions to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me; I see the pain inside your heart,
But I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart.
So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you near,
And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above,
I send you each a memory of my undying love.
After all “love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold.
It was always most important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do,
For I can’t count the blessings or love He has for you.
So have a joyous Christmas and wipe away the tear,
Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

A Special Foster Child Dec 09
Posted by South Mountain Villager on December 13, 2009
Foster Kid for December
Zach, 15, is upbeat with a lively and fun-loving spirit. “My favorite thing to do is to make people laugh and cheer them up,” Zach explained.
An energetic boy, Zach loves playing sports, especially soccer. During quiet time at home or at school, he enjoys drawing, painting and putting together small works of origami paper art.
If there is one thing Zach cannot get enough of, it is Pokemon cards. “I’m a Pokemon fan so I have all the Pokemon cards. I know every single Pokemon card in the whole world,” he said. “There are about over 500,” he exclaimed with eyebrows raised in dramatic arches over his face. One of Zach’s most prized possessions is a stuffed yellow Pikachu, Pokemon’s most well-known character.
While he has experienced challenges at school, his attitude is quite positive. Science is his favorite subject.
This active boy has quite an appetite. “Yes, I can eat a lot,” he admitted, laughing. Zach’s favorite food is Orange Chicken from the Panda Express.
Zach is eager to find a loving family of his very own. His ideal adoptive family is one with two parents and younger sisters in the home. Despite the promise of plenty of attention, Zach was not sure if being an only child would right for him. He explained that he enjoys being around kids and likes the idea of sharing a home with siblings.
Zach needs a family that can make a strong and loving commitment to him from the very start. It is important that his adoptive family is understanding of his emotional and behavioral needs and able to effectively advocate for his educational needs.
Zach has only a few requests for his adoptive family: He would like to be part of a family that loves pets. He has also requested an active, involved family that is eager to spend quality time with him doing outdoorsy activities and art projects.
For more information on Zachary or any of Arizona’s children in need of adoptive families, please call: 877-KIDS-NEED-U (877-543-7633) or visit our website www.azkidsneedu.gov.

Ed Pastor Dec 09
Posted by South Mountain Villager on December 13, 2009
Guest Column by U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, D-Ariz.
Most Americans have heard the message about the importance of going green. If we want to save our planet, save our future and essentially save ourselves, it benefits us all to embrace a green lifestyle.
Congress is trying to put America on the right path. Eco-smart and eco-friendly measures are key components of the recovery plan. A focus on clean energy can help lay a lasting foundation for America’s comeback, and investments into energy efficiency and new technologies are critical if we hope to strengthen our economy and reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil.
Closer to home, the federal stimulus package increased investment into weatherization grants, dollars that target struggling working families with assistance in providing insulation and energy conservation measures for their homes. Simple steps such as duct sealing and weather-stripping and caulking, or more significant measures such as replacing cooling systems, can save a family hundreds of dollars on utility bills each year. One Phoenix family who went through the program immediately experienced a $100/month reduction in their energy bill. Improving energy efficiency in our homes is smart not only for our environment, but for our pocketbooks, too.
Locally, the City of Phoenix received $7.2 million for its weatherization program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Services are available to residents who meet income criteria. A family of four could qualify if the household income is under $44,000 per year, for example.
I encourage residents to contact the city of Phoenix or their utility companies to learn about the weatherization programs and find out if they are eligible for this free assistance. (Phone numbers are listed below).
As Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, I am working with the U.S. Department of Energy to come up with more ideas to save money and energy at home, work, or while driving. The Department of Energy has set up a website with great ideas on www.energysavers.gov.
Every American can take powerful steps to reduce his or her energy use and further eliminate their personal “carbon footprint.” And with the help of stimulus dollars invested into local weatherization programs, more residents will be able to take advantage of energy- and cost-saving measures.
Phoenix residents may phone the following numbers for more weatherization program information:
City of Phoenix Weatherization Program 602-495-0700
Arizona Public Service weatherization program 602-262-6666
Salt River Project and Southwest Gas Corp. weatherization programs 602-495-0700

SML Chamber Dec 09
Posted by South Mountain Villager on December 13, 2009
The holidays are upon us and we look forward with a mixture of excitement and apprehension – excitement for time to spend with family and friends – apprehension for the myriad tasks to be completed before stepping away on vacation. In the spirit of the season, I refuse to be pessimistic. Although there is plenty of negativity in the economy, there are some bright points. The Wall Street Journal reports that the economic recovery is well underway. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is currently hovering around the 10,000 mark, a number which we have not seen since March of this year. While these two tidbits may not translate directly into increased business and economic security in South Mountain and Laveen, they can have a positive effect on your attitude,
In fact, attitude is so important – it is one of the major indices, which economists use to measure the strength of the economy. According to the RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index, American consumer attitudes have reached a twelve-month high in October of this year. As quoted by Michael Gross of the Ipsos News Center:
“Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s assertion three weeks ago that the recession is over, together with a lack of negative financial news since then, have had a galvanizing effect on consumer sentiment,” said RBC Capital Markets U.S. economist Tom Porcelli. “Although the trends are moving in the right direction, consumer confidence remains fragile, and unexpected bad news about the economy or markets could once again send sentiment spiraling downward.”
So what do these observations mean to us? They suggest that our collective attitude about the state of our economy actually affects the health of the economy. Our opinions about the strength or weakness of our community affect the attitudes and impressions of neighbors. Thus given a choice, I chose to remain optimistic and to continue to highlight all of the things that are going right – and we have plenty of successes to highlight.
Some of these successes pertain to the many people in our communities who go about quietly making a difference. These are individuals and businesses dedicated to South Mountain and Laveen – people who care about our schools, people who help the less fortunate in our midst, and people who draw attention to Laveen and South Mountain simply by their commitment to excellence. Perhaps you have been the recipient of one of their acts of service or have shopped at their business and witnessed first-hand their business practices.
Now is your opportunity to recognize these individuals or businesses that make a difference. Until December 15, 2009, you may nominate worthy candidates to be recognized at the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber Spirit of South Mountain Awards Dinner, which will be held on February 25, 2010. We are now accepting applications to recognize businesses and individuals in the following categories: (i) local business, (ii) non-profit agency, (iii) individual volunteer, (iv) local government agency, and (v) education/school administrator. Awards applications are available online at http://www.phoenixchamber.com/SMLC/.
