Good Folks (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 31, 2011

By George Young

(gayoung@cox.net)

This is a series of articles profiling some of the residents who live and work in the South Mountain/Laveen Villages.  In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us. In keeping with our Easter theme this month we will profile a church full of Good Folks.

A HISTORY of SOUTH MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CHURCH

717 East Southern Avenue, Phoenix, AZ

South Mountain Community ChurchSouth Mountain Community Church may be the oldest continuing congregation in the South Mountain Village, with its earliest community gatherings beginning before 1912 when local ranchers and their families gathered for Sunday School and worship in each others’ homes.  The Ladies Aid Society of South Phoenix, petitioned rancher Dwight B. Heard to donate a plot of land within his newly subdivided residential area for a community center.  Neighborhood House was constructed and became a multi-use facility for the area including Neighborhood Congregational Church.  Many of the families that met in homes held their first worship service in the Neighborhood House on Thanksgiving, 1912.  Neighborhood Congregational Church was charted in 1916.  It met in the Neighborhood House until the construction of the church building next door in 1945.

In 1923, land was given by the J. T. Bowles family to begin a Methodist Episcopal congregation in South Phoenix, located originally on Broadway Ave.   By the late 1950s, Grace Methodist Church had relocated, about 1.5 miles west of Neighborhood Congregational Church on Southern Avenue.  Both congregations were in expansion and building modes during the 1950s-60s.  Grace completed their second facility, and Neighborhood constructed an addition to the original fellowship hall and kitchen, plus a two-story education wing.  Later, Grace Church housed a child care center for the community.

Many members from the two congregations were friends, most notably through participation in Boy Scouts, plus some other community organizations such as what is now the Roosevelt Women’s Club, formerly the original Ladies Aid Society of South Phoenix.

In 1992, these two congregations officially merged to become South Mountain Community Church.  As a “federated church”, it is a member of two denominations: the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.

Currently SMCC hosts two other congregations in its facility:  Gentle Shepherd Metropolitan Community Church and the Samoan Christian Mission of Arizona and is in a covenant relationship with Wesley United Methodist Church across the street.

SMCC seeks to continue the tradition set by the Neighborhood House almost 100 years ago: to offer God’s grace by providing space for families and organizations in the South Mountain Village to gather and grow.

Rich Doerrer-Peacock

God Bless the Folks at SMCC and God Bless America and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

Arizona Leads the way – Part 1 of 2

By U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, Fourth Congressional District of Arizona

I was recently pleased to learn that Arizona is leading the nation and making great strides in one area that helps our community, and I wanted to share this information with you.

When it comes to providing services for people with special needs and disabilities, Arizona is very progressive. The best example of our state’s advancement in this area is the Arizona Disability Empowerment Center campus, the first of its kind in the nation. This 62,000 square-foot campus houses a dozen non-profit organizations that decided to come together to better serve people with disabilities. The agencies offer a variety of medical, counseling and employment programs, among other services. And the center will soon house a fitness center for accessible sports, such as wheelchair basketball and soccer, and three swimming pools, including a therapy one.

This center is such a gem, representatives from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, who recently met with me in Washington, couldn’t stop talking about it. It’s a great example of how the community can collaborate to bring their programs together to one accessible, convenient location, and it’s a model for the nation to follow, they said.

While we may have great resources, they’re only helpful if people know about them. That’s why I wanted to bring you information about the Disability Empowerment Center (DEC), which serves the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is conveniently located on the Phoenix Metro light rail system at 5025 E. Washington Street, and more information about the available services can be found here:   www.abil.org/disability-empowerment-center-information.  Arizona Bridge to Independent Living, or ABIL, Arizona’s largest center for independent living, also is housed in DEC and helped lead the building project.  With 465,000 people in Arizona living with disabilities, ABIL has worked aggressively to empower people with disabilities and provide resources to them. Some of the organizations housed in the center include Arizona Autism United, Inc., Raising Special Kids and Valley Center of the Deaf.

Presidents Call to Service Award (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 30, 2011

Presidents Call to Service Award

Who knew the President gave out awards for picking up trash?  I was honored and humbled recently on March 11th. 2011 by receiving an award for my work with The South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful for about the last 15 years.  The credit really goes to a whole group of folks that through the years have volunteered their time and energy to help keep our Village clean.  First of all I need to thank my Board of Directors, they have been there the clean ups (over 90 so far).  They are Joe Banks, Joe and Pauline Tofoya, Carlie Back, James, Robert and Abel Young and Kay Shepherd.  Also the great partners we have with: the City of Phoenix Police Department, Neighborhood Services Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Council Districts 7 and 8, Keep Phoenix Beautiful, Maricopa County District 5 and Wake-up Kids from local schools.  A few of our sponsors have been, Wal Mart, Phoenix Ranch Market, IHOP and many more that I do not have room to mention.  My appreciation also goes out to Phoenix Collegiate Academy, SABIS School, Maricopa County Probation Department and all the neighborhood associations that have volunteered their time and energy.  Special thanks go to Tom Waldeck and Cindi Moss of Keep Phoenix Beautiful for submitting my nomination.  “Have you picked yours today?” Trash that is!

Life Care Center of South Mountain (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 29, 2011

Life Care Center of South Mountain

Setting the bar for Skilled Nursing Care in the South Mountain Village and the State of Arizona

(By Ray Ramnarine)

Life Care Center of South Mountain has been a staple in the South Mountain Village for the past 13 years, our care and devotion to our staff and residents has resounded and evidenced itself in many ways. Our five star Medicare rating, wound care certified nurses, exraordinary rehab team and service unparalleled are just a few of our offerings and now this spring our amenities are set to grow exponentially.

On March 1, 2011 Life Care Center of South Mountain welcomes Dr. Nellie Pardo as our on site physician. This is unprecedented for a Skilled Nursing Facility. Traditionally skilled nursing facilities have contracted physicians that visit the buildings two three times per week, having an on site physician thoroughly changes that scenario.   Dr. Pardo’s office will be based out of the facility and means daily and complete access to her expertise as well as an ability to treat and manage acute health issues here at the facility decreasing our need to send residents out to the hospital.

Along with the a resident physician we are now offering onsite podiatry services, which means foot and nail care consistently available to our residents. This is also an amenity that typically is unavailable to those residents who reside at a skilled nursing facility.  Aside from growth in clinical aspects of skilled care within the facility there are also the needs that exist outside of the facility. Life Care Center of South Mountain recognizes these needs and is striving to address them. We have partnered with Maricopa County and have begun to offer smoking cessation classes. We have trained and certified six tobacco cessation specialists and are looking forward to helping our community to stay healthy and smoke free. We have also recognized the major chronic diseases that affect our community and this spring will offer a variety of support groups for these ailments, which include COPD, Diabetes and CHF.

Life Care Center of South Mountain has long been a leader of health care in South Phoenix; we maintain a complete and utter commitment to our community and have achieved the highest of accolades. The spring of 2011 will further demonstrate our commitment to care and our ability to stay ahead of the times. We look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Robinson Ranch Benefit (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 29, 2011

It may seem less therapeutic and more like play, but equine-assisted therapy and lead line riding really can help those with physical and mental disabilities. While there is little controlled research on the subject, physical therapists progress notes, as well as reports from physicians, teachers, and parents testify to its benefits. These benefits include improved respiration, circulation, balance, and body metabolism along with greater muscle strength and agility. The warmth and motion of the horse mimicking that of the human body can also reduce muscle spasticity in the legs, back, neck and arms. Mounting, dismounting and grooming are also useful in enhancing range of motion.

Psychosocial benefits reported are improvements in self-esteem, self-image, and interpersonal skills. Many students also become more outgoing and autistic children have been known to communicate spontaneously for the first time with a horse!

History of Southern Baptist Temple Church (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 29, 2011

History of Southern Baptist Temple Church

By Verna McClain

The Southern Baptist Temple Church is celebrating 65 years of service to the South Mountain Community.    In 1946, 14 people got to gather to establish a church. They meet at the Roosevelt School.  In 1947 they purchased 5 acres at 6520 South Central Avenue. That year they dedicated the original Church.  In 1958 they built a new auditorium and in 1961 and the fellowship hall was added 1962. They dedicated the education building which housed a nursery and kinder garden for many years.  Through the years they have sponsored several Church’s and sent a missionary to China. At the present time one of buildings is occupied by Unlimited Potential, a program for Hispanic Women.  Another building is occupied by The Arizona Humane Society Thrift Store.  A lot of Ministers have come and gone. The present Pastor Jess Garrison and wife Janet and 3 sons have been with the Church since 1986. They are a very diverse congregation; they offer something for all ages.  They are very community minded. In December they have a Holiday Fun Fest, free food, entertainment and all children go home with a large stocking filled with goodies.  If you are looking for a Church Home, give them a try. Check their ad for service time or phone 692-276-5925.

Lowmans (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 28, 2011

Lowman’s Arizona Funeral Home

Keeping Costs Down and Values Up in Today’s Economy

Greetings Fellow Villagers!  We would like to wish you all a Happy Easter and Happy Spring.  What an awesome time of year when we have the privilege of witnessing the blooming of all our beautiful cacti, flowering bushes and stunning flowers that are each so unique, delicate, differently textured and exceptional in their colors.

Witnessing and actually stopping to be thankful for the changing into such a beautiful season, is much like embracing the gift of life God has given to each of us.  We are all “unique” and “special” in God’s eyes, colorful in our personalities, and are blessed when our family members and friends embrace and appreciate these qualities as well.  Life is such a gift that we are all innocent of, more or less, taking advantage of our next breath, as though it is something that is a “given”.  Times have changed so much that, most of us approach each new day with the thought of how much fun we can have without stopping to truly value the opportunity each new day presents to us.

Each new day is an opportunity to become a better person, parent, grandparent, friend, brother, sister, and most importantly, child of God.  Yes, each new day can also present us with new challenges, bumps in the road, and sometimes what seems to be “mountains to climb”.  With the changing of our times and the economy, this can sometimes appear to be a greater test to our character than we, as humans, feel we can bear.

Serving in the funeral industry and helping families get through the most difficult time in their lives, (the loss of a loved one), can be challenging especially in today’s economy.  We, at Lowmans Arizona Funeral Home, are very mindful of the hard times many families face and believe that the prices and services we offer reflect our awareness.  We know that people aren’t only looking for a good price, but also meaningful and valued services for that price.  It has been a conscious decision for us to keep our prices in “check” to continue to serve our families with integrity, being mindful of the significant rises in the cost of gas, groceries, utilities, clothing, healthcare, childcare, entertainment, (I was shocked to learn that a movie now costs $9.50 per person!), and the list goes on.

Serving and speaking with so many families, we have become more and more aware of our competitors philosophies and pricing.  We are presented daily with families that come in with some of our competitors “quote” that exceeds ours by literally a thousand dollars to thousands of dollars.

To be genuine and honest in the last statement, we have learned that the corporate owned competitors have a “professional fee”, (a non-declinable fee), that is $2,200.  Their “removal” fee, (transportation of a loved one from the place of death to the funeral home) is $695.  Those two fees add up to $2,895.  Add in their cost for preparation of human remains, $695, and you are already at $3,590.  Keep in mind that there are many other fees involved in creating a funeral service.

Our “professional fee” is $950’s; “removal” is $225.  When we, here at Lowmans Arizona Funeral Home, add in the cost of preparation of human remains, (embalming), dressing, cosmetics, and casketing, visitation, funeral service, graveside service, transportation to the church and/or cemetery, our total for all of these services comes to $2,575.  This does not include the casket, (pricing begins at $475), or the $100 memorial package.  It does, however, give you a pretty good idea that we are conscious and mindful that these times have created a bigger challenge for families to be able to financially afford a meaningful and much needed service when God has call a loved one home.  We also, at no additional charge, process Life Insurances and pension plans to assist our families in navigating through the mountains of paperwork you are faced with when a loved one dies.  We are here to help you trigger the grieving process, (which is healthy), as well as help guide you through the entire process of, not just caring for your loved one, but also caring for you.  In the 14 ½ years of serving you, our cremation price has only risen once.

Since we have opened our doors for business, we have made a conscious effort to provide you, the community, with helpful and important information to assist in empowering you to ask the right questions and better aid you in making educated and reasonable decisions when it comes to the loss of a loved one.  We truly believe that we are here to serve, striving, on a daily basis, to present you with the best possible options at a most difficult time, while still being mindful of today’s economy.  Since day one, we have always encouraged you to have a budget for a service and to do what you can to stay within that budget.

Our loved ones don’t want any of us to go into financial debt at such a difficult time.  We will continue to encourage all of you to pre-arrange your own services, reflecting your desires of how you want things done, assisting you in ways of keeping the costs down, without compromising the quality of services provided.

All of our prices are located on our website; www.lowmansarizonafuneralhome.com, so this information is available at your fingertips.

As always, we appreciate you taking the time to read this article and hope that the information provided is helpful to you.  Bill and Ingried Lowman are available 24/7 at (602) 276-3601, toll free (877) 276-3601, fax (602) 276-1889, or our website, listed above.  May all of you be richly blessed this spring and Easter season.

Jaguar Step Team at South Mountain High School (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 26, 2011

Jaguar Step Team at South Mountain High School

Marvlyn Jones, a Phoenix Union School District employee, began volunteering her time with teenagers over 30 years ago.  Ms. Jones’ motivation has always been to provide young people with a safe outlet for expression through step and dance routines, while keeping them focused on their future success in their post-secondary endeavors.  Ms. Jones coached the step team at Camelback High School for 12 years before establishing the Jaguar Step Team at South Mountain High School in 2007.  Ms. Jones has been able to recruit additional motivated and dedicated staff, community members and organizations (such as the Alphi phi Alpha Fraternity of ASU) who all volunteer their time to coach, mentor, and cultivate our future leaders.  The Jaguar Step team’s members are all high school students from South Mountain High School and are required to maintain passing grades in all classes in order to perform/compete.

On February 26, 2011, the team traveled to California to compete against 14 other step teams in the Shiekh Stepping in the Right Direction High School Step Show.  The Jaguar Step Team won 1st place in the co-ed category as well as won the Grand Prize for best overall step team. The team returned to Arizona with two trophies and $1000.  Their next scheduled competition is the Marcos De Niza High School Step Show on March 26, 2011.

The team accepts tax-credit donations to purchase annual uniforms, travel to compete or perform in local and out of state step shows, and assist students with post-secondary needs. More information about the Jaguar Step Team can be found on South Mountain High School’s Activities page at:  www.southmountainhs.org

Foster Child (April 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 26, 2011

Taylor

Taylor is an active, kind, happy 9-year old.  He likes to watch movies, play video games and play outside. Initially, Taylor can be shy until he warms up to you, then he wants your full attention.

Taylor is in the 3rd grade.   He has made improvements academically and behaviorally at school due to the structure and consistency that his school provides.

Taylor likes to build items and then likes to take them apart.  His case manager states that one day, he would like to build a fort from scratch using a hammer and nails.

Taylor’s ideal family would be a two parent family who has strong parenting skills and/or a behavioral health background.  His ideal family would have younger children in the home.  He is going to need a family who is patient, understanding and willing to provide the structure he is going to need to be successful.

For more information about Taylor or any of Arizona’s children in foster care, please care 1-877-KIDS-NEEDU (1-877-543-7633) or visit www.azkidsneedu.gov.
