Scooptacular (NOV 11)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 28, 2011
Scooptacular
I scream, you scream, we all scream for Scooptacular. We’ve been open for almost one and a half years at our easy accessible location in the Fry’s Parking lot next to Starbucks. In our first year we’ve made over 80 premium and specialty flavors including Thanksgiving Turkey and Play Ball – Hotdog, to our best sellers Oatmeal Cookie, Cookie Monster, Laveen Concrete Mix and Cookies & Cream.
May 4th we celebrated our 1st year as Laveen’s Ice Cream shop with $1.00 specials throughout the day with 100% of our total sales benefiting the Scooptacular college staff as scholarships. Over $1500 was raised that day!
In September, Scooptacular went bananas for books! We collected books to help add to the libraries of Eagle College Prep and Riverbend Prep. Every book that was brought in was redeemed for a free kids cone. Over 200 books were collected.
Scooptacular loves being a part of the community. In our first year we have been able to give back over $12,000 through our various fundraisers and partnerships that include churches, schools, and the American Cancer Society.
During our first year in Laveen we have added several items to our menu including Sundaes with your choice of toppings. Monsoons, our version of a hand spun milkshake. Shave Ice in 3 sizes, with 30 syrups that can make 100’s of flavor combinations including sugar free. We still make our waffle cones fresh daily.
Watch for Scooptacular at our schools, games, community events, and we look forward to seeing you in the store where we serve not just ice cream but “happiness in a cup.”

What’s Happening In The South Mountain/Laveen Village’s

This month I want to mention a little about our Village. The South Mountain Village (SMV) extends from the Rio Salado to the South Mountain Park Preserve, the largest municipal park in the country and 48th. Street on the east and 27th. Avenue on the west. From the ridge line of South Mountain to farm fields and urban neighborhoods, the village offers many different living environments. Although containing established neighborhoods, SMV is in many ways a young, developing area. The core of the village is in the vicinity of Central Avenue and the Salt River. Significant concentrations of employment are also being created in the northeast portion of the village. This area is accessible from the Maricopa Freeway and is close to Sky harbor International Airport. The intensification is being balanced by quality residential and commercial development near the foothills of the South Mountain. The image of SMV is strengthened by its rural atmosphere and its feeling of open space. Many of the distinct features of the village are: The Mountain Preserve, foothills and agricultural areas that serve as additional area of interest within the village. Emphasis is directed toward maintaining and enhancing these areas. The Rio Salado provides a unique opportunity to develop its potential recreational aspects. Leisure time activities include hiking, horseback riding, biking and visiting the Audubon Society. The rural and open character of the village will be further enhanced by maintaining and attracting quality foothill development, such as the Baseline Road and Dobbins Scenic drives. Please take some time and enjoy our Village. It is truly a great place to live, work and play.
The South Mountain Village Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday, 8th. 2011 at 6:30 PM at the South Mountain Community College, 7050 South 24th. Street, Student Union Building.
The Target Area B Citizens Action Committee will meet on Wednesday, November 30th. 2011 at 6:30 PM at the Travis L. Williams Family Services Center, 4732 South Central Avenue.

Foster Child for November (NOV 11)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 25, 2011
TAKODA
Takoda, 13, is sweet, polite and outgoing. He enjoys camping, basketball, video games, hanging out with friends, drawing, and being active.
Being in the Boy Scouts is another passion of Takoda’s. He is quick to show you all of the Merit Badges he has earned thus far. “I only need 5 more to get my rank,” he says, with a proud grin.
When asked what he would like to be when he grows up, Takoda doesn’t hesitate. “I want to go to college and then enter the Air Force.”
Takoda is a good student. In the 8th grade he likes to read and is curious about many things, which shows in his above average grades.
When it comes to movies, Takoda likes action movies such as The Hulk, Back to the Future and The Karate Kid. He enjoys music as well and has an eclectic list of favorites including Rascal Flatts, Eminem and the Glee soundtrack.
“Pizza, Subway and the Macaroni ‘N Cheese at Red Robin,” replies Takoda when asked about his favorite foods.
More than anything else, Takoda would like a family to call his own. He would like to have a mom, a dad and perhaps a brother near his own age — someone to hang out with. Takoda states that he may be open to a single parent as well.
For more information about Takoda or any of Arizona’s children in foster care, please care 1-877-KIDS-NEEDU (1-877-543-7633) or visit www.azkidsneedu.gov.

Lowmans Arizona Funeral Home
Family of Dollars First?
(By Ingried Lowman)
Greetings fellow Villagers and Happy Fall to each and every one of you. It’s hard to believe that the fall season is already upon us, though the temperatures still feel like that of summer. Still, we in Arizona are quite blessed that we have not had to deal with the disasters that so many other parts of our country and families have had the challenges of dealing with. We are truly blessed.
Again, the funeral industry has been in the news with the tragedy of a crematory that was operating without integrity, stacking human remains in vehicles and what not, because they just “got so busy that they couldn’t keep up”. This specific crematory solicited our business on several occasions, trying to convince us that, using them would be a smart financial decision as we could save $50 per case. Bill and I were consistent with our answer stating that “if it’s not broken, we don’t need to change or ‘fix it’”. Many funeral homes made the change. We’re quite certain that if it wasn’t for our constant seeking of God’s guidance and our philosophy, we may have looked at the dollar signs and concluded that this would be a good financial decision. Thankfully, we learned that, once again, money isn’t everything and sometimes saving a few dollars can cost you more than you want to pay. It reminds me of what one of our pastors once told our congregation; “Sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.” What great words of wisdom to live and work by.
We mourn and pray for the families that this ‘situation’ has affected and pray for those in our industry to always put families, not dollars, first. We believe that if the family always comes first, God will take care of the rest. When one looses a loved one and chooses a funeral home, we believe that it is up to the funeral home to guide the family through this extremely difficult time, ensuring that their loved one will be treated with the utmost respect. Whether it is cremation or burial that the family has chosen, our job is to ensure that integrity goes into every facet of our caring for the human remains and family, assisting and guiding them through the entire process, helping them to make good sound decisions that they can live with and feel good about. This includes financial decisions. Sure, every funeral home would love to sell $4,000 to $6, 000 caskets with every funeral arrangement they make. However, is this in the best interest of the family? Is the family going to have the funds to go on with their lives and care for their family? Will this funeral put them in financial debt? Is this what their loved one would have wanted? Will God receive them better in heaven if it costs more? We think “NOT”. After all, did Jesus die a wealthy man? For those of us that know the story, He was not financially wealthy, but He was, and is, richer than any human being can imagine.
We have seen a definitive increase in families making pre-arrangements. This ensures that their funeral reflects what they want, keeping their arrangements within a budget that they feel good about. This prevents their loved ones from being left with the burden of so many decisions. When someone is grieving the loss of their loved one, emotions are running high and this can sometimes create a situation where one spends more than they need or want to. That is why communicating with your family on this issue of dying, is so important. Does your family know your wishes?
I had the privilege of speaking at an Edward Jones event here recently, hosted by a delightful Julie Gunn, at the Arizona Animal Shelter – Campus of Compassion. I asked four questions to start. The first being; “How many of you have health Insurance?” Every ones hand went up. “How many of you have automobile Insurance?” Again, every hand went up. “How many of you have homeowners Insurance?” Once again, every hand went up. I got to my forth question; “How many of you have funeral Insurance?” Only one was able to raise their hand.
I made the point that we have health Insurance “just in case” we get sick. We have automobile Insurance “just in case” we get into a car accident. We have homeowners Insurance “just in case” damage is done to our home, (hail anyone?!?). Just think about the money we all spend on the “just in case” things!! But the only two sure things in life are “taxes” and “death”. Why do so many of us fail to plan for what is so certain? We encourage you to think about it.
As always, thank you for taking the time to read this article. We look forward to seeing all of our Pioneers at the 37th Annual Pioneer Luncheon on November 6th. As always, Bill and Ingried Lowman are available 24/7, at (602) 276-3601, toll free (877) 276-3601, fax (602) 276-1889, or lowmansarizonafuneralhome.com.
