SABIS School gets visit from the Arizona Cardinals

Safeway and SRP have teamed up with the Arizona Cardinals football team to promote reading with “The Milk and Cookies Program”. A local school is selected to have students participate. On November 22, 2011 SABIS International School of The South Mountain Village was chosen for this event.  A group of 50 second graders who were chosen by a lottery got to meet the Cardinals mascot, Big Red , who danced with the students and got them excited about reading. Following Big Red the students were read to by player Andre Roberts  #12, wide receiver of the Cardinals . After reading some of the kids’ favorite books he answered questions and joined them for milk and cookies supplied by Safeway stores.  Thank you to Safeway, SRP and the Arizona Cardinals for making this a special day for our students.

RSD (Dec 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on December 15, 2011

Tax credits are a great way to provide RSD students with access to extracurricular activities

Are you looking for a great way to get a tax credit while helping out the students of the Roosevelt School District? You can still get your last minute tax credit for 2011. All you have to do is fill out the form to your right and you’ll be helping out our students while helping out yourself as well.

Getting the tax credit is simple. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax amount owed. For example, if you owe $800 in state income taxes and you donate $400 to a public school for extracurricular activities, you may subtract the $400 from your tax bill and pay the state just $400. If you anticipate a refund from the state, it would increase by the amount of your contribution, assuming you had that amount withheld.

According to state law, these donations must be used for extracurricular activities. With your help, Roosevelt School District is able to offer tutoring, band, music, art, recreational activities, and much more. Extracurricular activities help children develop qualities such as leadership, team play, and cooperation, as well as provide safe, supervised activities after school hours. Thanks to you, these programs could be available to all Roosevelt students.

All Arizona taxpayers are eligible to take advantage of this tax credit regardless of whether or not they have children in our schools. A married couple filing jointly may contribute and receive a tax credit up to $400. A single individual may contribute up to $200. Donations must be received by December 31 in order to be eligible for the tax credit this calendar year. A receipt will be provided for tax purposes.

For more information, call 602-243-4800 or visit our website at www.rsd.k12.az.us to download a copy of our tax credit brochure.

Martin Auto Museum (DEC 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on December 15, 2011

Martin Auto Museum

Now open to the Public

Thursday, Friday & Saturday’s, 12pm to 6pm

The formerly private Martin Auto Museum has just announced that it will now open its doors to the public every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 noon to 6pm beginning on Friday October 28th 2011, (which coincidently happens to be my birthday, thank you very much). Organized back in 2005, the Martin Auto Museum Inc. was created by Arizona entrepreneur Mel Martin to showcase his private collection of vintage vehicles and is now registered with the IRS as a 501(c)3 non-profit “dedicated to the preservation of collectible and rare automobiles for educational purposes.”

As his collection continued to grow and the building expanded, Mel saw a need to share this collection of vehicles that represented significant periods in automotive history. At the Martin Auto Museum, visitors can view automotive history through the decades in this vast collection. There are also enough race cars and one-of-a-kind vehicles to excite any automotive, art or history enthusiast. In addition to the collection, there is lots of meeting space available for groups of up to 120 people. It is the perfect “centrally located” place to hold car club meetings or any special event in. Check it out.

The Martin Auto Museum is located at 17641 North Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix Az 85023. Just go north off of Bell Road on the east-side of I-17′s Frontage Road until you see the MMA Museums sign. If you are familiar with “Grumpy’s” vintage parts over there along the I-17 east-side Frontage Road, Mel’s place is just two buildings south of Grumpy’s. The Martin Auto Museum phone number is (602) 971-4753 and their fax number is (602) 971-4836. You can also e-mail Mel at: melcarup@aol.com and the MMA Museums web site is at: www.MartinAutoMuseum.org.

Roosevelt School District leading the way in healthy food choices

Salad Bars have long been an offering in the food service industry; however most people are accustomed to seeing them in restaurants, not a school lunch program. Roosevelt School District is no stranger to the salad bar program and has offered them for the past five years in all 20 of their school cafeterias. The program has always been well received by the community.

During the summer, the Roosevelt School District upgraded their Salad Bars with new looks and more choices to meet the changing needs of the children participating in the National School Lunch Program. Roosevelt’s Chef Jim Hemmen felt the timing was right to launch an upgrade; the finances were available to purchase new and updated salad bars for all schools thus creating an opportunity to increase the variety of fresh fruits and vegetable choices daily. The biggest motivator was the ability to continue the quest to improve the quality of the meal program for everyone.

With First Lady Michelle Obama promoting the “Let’s Move” campaign nationwide, attention to school lunches are at an all-time high. “Eating more fruits and vegetables,re-vamping  USDA recommended dietary guidelines and increased physical activity are no longer buzz words, they are mainstream ideals for change in the way our young people are educated and raised”, said Chef Hemmen. That was evident recently at a national convention where the focus and training on the subject accounted for 80 percent of the agenda. The Child Nutrition climate is changing daily and the best operators are becoming extremely innovative in their programs.

Lowmans (JUNE 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on May 23, 2011

Lowmans Arizona Funeral Home

“Thank You for 15 Years of Serving You”

Greetings fellow Villagers!  Happy Fathers Day to all of you dads out there!  This is another opportunity for all of us to honor these phenomenally special people in our lives.  Our prayer is that you embrace your father while he is still amongst you, and if he is not, may you joyfully cherish and hold close to your heart your memories that you and your father had created together.  It’s hard to believe that it is already 2 years, this Fathers Day, that my dad went home to be with his heavenly Father.  I am eternally grateful for being blessed with such a great man in my life.  He, along with mom, helped to shape me and helped me to create “standards” in my life to live by.  I will always be appreciative of the privilege of having parents that treasured the reality of how important it is to have faith in God.  If it wasn’t for that faith, challenges that have been, (and continue to be), placed before me would have been too great to overcome.  Because of what I was taught, I know in my heart that I will never be alone.  God gives me immeasurable comfort and strength; with knowledge that I am always loved.

It is with God’s comfort and strength that Bill and I are able to do what we do.  This June marks 15 years of serving you, our community family and friends, in the funeral industry.  It’s hard for us to believe that it has already been 15 years!!  We don’t feel 15 years older!  You have all been so kind and welcoming towards us that you inspire and motivate us to keep going and to do better on a daily basis.  Your “stories” are moving as much as they are remarkable and encouraging to us.  This community, and the many amazing individuals that help to make it so special, is an inspiration to us and many.  Being given the privilege to serve you has taught us so much.

Fifteen years ago, we started by, (and continue to) educating the community of the many options available to you in the funeral industry.  Since then, the options have grown as the needs have changed and developed as well.  This has presented us with opportunities for us to expand in the way we serve you.  Due to the rise in cost of cemetery property, (now averaging $6,000 to $8,000+), cremation has become more prevalent.  Traditional services, which includes the viewing of your loved one, and a funeral service, in many cases, now concludes at the church or the funeral home, with cremation following.  The “final disposition” (as cremation or burial is referred), through Lowmans Arizona Funeral Home, is at an average cost of $170, if cremation is chosen.  This is quite a savings to many during these economically trying times.  It is extremely important to hold onto the fact that death is difficult enough without having to struggle financially to take care of your loved ones final disposition.

There are so many new and creative ways to celebrate our loved ones.  The video presentations are heartwarming and create a thoughtful way of always being able to take a walk down memory lane, sharing copies of the video with family members and friends.  I will always treasure the one given to me of my father.  I will also always cherish the “Thumbie” necklace I have with my father’s thumbprint on it.  To me, it is a small symbol of the impression dad left in my life.  I am comforted and love knowing that I can just reach up to feel and touch the ridges of his imprint at the end of my necklace.  It also helps me to be mindful that we all leave an imprint, or impression, in another person’s heart by how we treat, encourage, and love them.  There are many keepsakes available to help us all celebrate our loved ones, what they stood for and what they loved about life.  Just about anything is now being made to commemorate a specific quality or passion in our loved ones life.  Keepsakes are available to honor religious preferences, memorialize Harley Davidson lovers, cowboys, dog lovers, ocean lovers, and just about everything in between.  We are pleased to see that the industry is also thoughtful towards the younger crowd, allowing options that are more palatable to the different age groups.  Unfortunately, death knows no age, race, or creed so it is important to meet the needs of everyone.
