————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Mr. Joe Banks III
I have the privilege of having a friend that displays the utmost in integrity, respect and love for his family and others. Unlike myself, this person was born and raised in Phoenix. He is a father, husband, grandfather, mentor and an all around great guy. His dedication to making South Mountain Village a great place to live, play and work is unsurpassed by his love for children. He is a member of the South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful, The Target Area “B” Citizens Action Committee, (former member) Rio Salado Citizens Action Committee, The South Mountain & Laveen Village Chamber of Commerce and more. His name is Mr. Joe Banks III.
Mr. Joe Banks III has been married to Dee, his wife of forty-five years. Dee is also a wonderful and caring person, as in many households she is the glue that holds the family together. Not only is she a great cook, but also creates works of art with her cake decorating. He has two children, Joe IV and Dean his youngest. Dean works with his father at Ironco. Inc. Located at 1029 East Broadway Road. One of Joe’s deepest wishes is to have grandchildren. He currently has one granddaughter, Lilly; needless to say she is the apple of his eye. Joe loves children. I do not believe he has ever met a child he did not like. Joe is also involved with the Roosevelt School Districts Rosa Linda School He spends many hours doing things for kids. He has been a contributor to the Villager for five years with his great articles to kids.
Joe has had many occupations in his life, but the consistent one has been one of blacksmith (a dying trade in our country). He is one of the most creative and artistic people I know. It is amazing what he can design and create out of metal. He is meticulous in everything he does; he holds himself to a very high standard when it comes to constructing a product. One of his greatest attributes is his willingness to help people. There are hundreds of people in our Village and valley wide that he has built or constructed something for. Some they paid for, some not.
There is a lighter side to Joe. He loves a practical joke. He showed up at Board meeting one day dressed like a woman. His plan was to set a new fad to replace people from wearing baseball caps backwards, sideward etc. Needless to say it never caught on and people still wear baseball caps in all directions. I am sorry I cannot reveal many of his jokes, it would offend some people and some would be downright mad.
I am truly blessed, proud and fortunate to have Joe as my friend and may God Bless Mr. Joe Banks III and his Family and God Bless America. and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

Ask Grandpa
“A lady did something very nice for my Mom and me. She left before we could thank her. I have her plate number but no one will give me her name or number. Can you tell me how to contact her?” Rebecca.

When I hear things like that, It makes me happy. Now the lady made us all happy. She probably knows that and doesn’t need any more of a “Thanks”. You used to be able to locate people by requesting the information from the Motor Vehicle Department but because a few bad apples used the information for nefarious purposes’, the policy was changed. Just another example of a few reprobates messing it up for every one else. Anyway, I was listing to a country western song the other day, I don’t remember the name of it but it fit your dilemma like a preachers flask: A person was asked how much was owed for some service that had been provided and the giver answered “You don’t owe me a thing, but, if you want to pay me something, just pass the favor along when you have the chance.” The song went on to make the point, but you get it already.
You know Rebecca; some times all it takes to brighten someone’s day is a simple “Hi” or a cheerful smile. We can’t all leap tall buildings or change the oceans tides but we can settle for something as simple as a “Hello, you sure look nice today”. That’s a start. Tomorrow we’ll work on the tides. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
- Grandpa

In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us. There were a whole bunch of folks that came together to make the following possible. We thank them all.
There is a lady in our Village that I have the privilege of calling my friend and is one of the kindness people I know. You have seen her picture in the Villager for years and other print media in our Village. Maybe you have received one of her postcards. Maybe you have seen her at the annual Haunted Hayride, local parades, Pioneer luncheon, South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful event picking up trash or cooking or other local events. Maybe she has assisted you in buying or selling your property. Maybe you have seen her on the side of her company moving van. Yes, she has her own moving van that is available for folks to use if they are one of her clients and need a way to move their personal items after a purchase or sale of their home. It is also available for church’s and non-profits.
She has a very busy professional life, but somehow finds time to volunteer in our Village. She is on the Board of the South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful, Co, Treasurer (and yes she does pick up trash), a member of the South Mountain Community College Advisory Board, South Mountain/Laveen Chamber Advisory Board, was the president of the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber and has recently volunteered to join and support the South Mountain/Laveen Village Festival of Thanksgiving Committee and agreed to let the committee use space in her office building located at 3540 East Baseline for meetings and also her administrative staff for support. She has written many informative articles for the Villager and the South Mountain District News about real estate. She is well versed in short sales, bankruptcies, and anything that has to do with today’s ever changing real estate market.
She has lived in our Village about 20 years, in that time she has made a big difference in many folk’s lives. She graduated from ASU and about fifteen years ago started her own business. By now you probably have guess that I am talking about Mrs. Carlie Back, of the Carlie Back Team with Keller Williams Lifestyle Realty. You know the “How Fast Can You Say Sold” lady (602-305-9033 or go to her web site at www carlieback.com). I could write pages about Carlie, but unfortunately I have my print limitations.
Thank you Carlie for being my dear friend and for everything you do for our Village. God Bless the South Mountain Community College and the City of Phoenix and God Bless America and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

I NEVER HEARD OF THE SOUTH MOUNTAIN/LAVEEN FESTIVAL
By Judy Bradley
The off campus bullies who caused such havoc at South Mountain High School in 1972 probably didn’t care about the terrible newspaper headlines that stained the area’s reputation. But a small group of locals did care and sought to reverse the negative publicity by focusing on why we are thankful to be living south of the Salt River. Thus, the Festival of Thanksgiving was born.
The first year, community leaders staged a two-day event that began with just a few tables set up at South High, promoting positive events and services available to residents and an inter-faith service of Thanksgiving: these activities continue today. This idea of spotlighting the positive aspects of our area quickly grew into a community wide nine-day event. Over the next 40 years, activities have come and gone as the Festival evolved.
Once, ladies over the age of 65 strutted their stuff over the Neighborhood House Stage. Some sang, some twirled rope and some read poetry. But they all had to wear a swimsuit! Youngsters participated in track and field demonstrations and athletic competitions at local schools. Historically, bathtubs rolled down Central Avenue propelled by teams of business and community leaders. Open Houses were often held at schools, churches and community centers.
There have been pancake breakfasts, Easter egg hunts, visits from Santa Claus and turkey shoots. Along the way, the Festival has collected food and toys for the needy and provided safe and fun activities for kids of all ages. For a number of years the Festival in conjunction with Mervyns Department Stores, hosted a back-to- school shopping spree for youngsters.
In 1974 a Parade was added to the mix. Clowns, who were in real life committee members, cavorted down South Central in outfits sewn by local seamstress, Irene Kinsley. Some of he same clowns and costumes can be seen each year on the first Saturday in November. School bands, ROTC units, an occasional float and costumed characters’ (Smokey the Bear and Easter Bunny were once frequent guests (when we could find someone tall enough to wear the costumes) still march along the Parade route.
Festival activities used to be held only in November. We’ve moved beyond that. For the past 23 years the Festival has provided refreshments and decorations for the Naturalization ceremony. On July 4th, about 250 people will become new U.S. citizens at the ceremony at South Mountain Community College. October 20th. to 23rd, continuing a 25-year tradition, the Festival will host a safe and inexpensive Halloween activity at South Mountain Park. Santa comes to our area frequently in December. Join us on December 10th. at the Southern Baptist Church athletic field to see the jolly fellow and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Over the next couple of South Mountain Villager issues we’ll spotlight upcoming Festival events and offer you an opportunity to help us continue a 40-year tradition.

The Good Folks of the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s
By George Young
(gayoung@cox.net)
This is a series of articles profiling some of the residents who live and work in the South Mountain/Laveen Villages. In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us. The South Mountain Villager would like to welcome Dr. Shari Olson to our community and our campus.
Dr. Olson served in various leadership roles at Northland Community and Technical College, a multi-campus college in East Grand Forks and Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She also served as a faculty member at United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck, N.D. While there, she developed an associate degree program in Early Childhood Education and completed her master’s degree at North Dakota State University with research on learning styles of adult students. Dr. Olson is a first generation college student and earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the same institution. She earned her doctorate in Higher Education Leadership at the University of North Dakota.
Dr. Olson was selected to participate in the League for Innovation’s Executive Leadership Institute in Phoenix and the American Community College Trustees’ Leadership Academy, Washington, D.C. She also attended the National Institute for Leadership Development and Leaders for Change. She has received several awards, including the 2008 Exemplary International Leader Award from the Chair Academy and induction into Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Upsilon Omicron honor societies. She’s not an actual SMCC employee yet, but incoming President Dr. Shari Olson received a wonderful parting gift from her colleagues in Minnesota this spring: she was selected the Minnesota College President of the Year, for her service at Anoka Technical College in Anoka. It was the first time the award had been given to an Interim President.
Says Dr. Olson: “My year has been filled with amazing happenings. I have been so fortunate to have this challenging assignment. Many lives have been changed, including mine. I am looking forward to starting my assignment at SMCC on July 1st!”, and so are we.
God Bless the Dr. Shari Olson and God Bless America and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

This month I want to share a little about my friend and partner, Dr. Joyce Elsner. I first met Dr. Elsner when she was appointed to the South Mountain Village Planning Committee. She is currently the Interim President at South Mountain Community College. Below is a short bio about her. I want to personally thank her for doing a great job during our transition to our new President Dr. Shari Olson. The South Mountain Villager would like to welcome Dr. Olson.

Dr. Joyce K. Elsner
Dr Joyce K Elsner came to South Mountain Community College in 2003 to serve as Vice President of Administrative Services. In July 2010, she was appointed Interim President as the college began its national search for a new permanent president.
Having come to the Maricopa County Community College District in 1978, Dr. Elsner served as Dean at Rio Salado Community College, Dean and Vice President of Administrative Services at Glendale Community College, and as Vice President of Administrative Services at South Mountain Community College.
Dr. Elsner earned her doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles, in Higher Education, Community Colleges. She received her Master of Science degree in Child Development from the University of Arizona, and her bachelor’s degree in Child Development from California State University, Long Beach, California.
Since 1987, Dr. Elsner has served as a Consultant-Evaluator and an Accreditation Chair for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. Within the South Mountain Village area, she has served on the South Mountain Village Planning Committee (2005-2010), and as a Board Member for the South Mountain YMCA. In addition, she was the first female member of the Glendale Rotary Club, eventually serving as Club President.
God Bless the Dr. Joyce Elsner and God Bless America and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us. In keeping with our Easter theme this month we will profile a church full of Good Folks.
A HISTORY of SOUTH MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CHURCH
717 East Southern Avenue, Phoenix, AZ
South Mountain Community Church may be the oldest continuing congregation in the South Mountain Village, with its earliest community gatherings beginning before 1912 when local ranchers and their families gathered for Sunday School and worship in each others’ homes. The Ladies Aid Society of South Phoenix, petitioned rancher Dwight B. Heard to donate a plot of land within his newly subdivided residential area for a community center. Neighborhood House was constructed and became a multi-use facility for the area including Neighborhood Congregational Church. Many of the families that met in homes held their first worship service in the Neighborhood House on Thanksgiving, 1912. Neighborhood Congregational Church was charted in 1916. It met in the Neighborhood House until the construction of the church building next door in 1945.
In 1923, land was given by the J. T. Bowles family to begin a Methodist Episcopal congregation in
South Phoenix, located originally on Broadway Ave. By the late 1950s, Grace Methodist Church had relocated, about 1.5 miles west of Neighborhood Congregational Church on Southern Avenue. Both congregations were in expansion and building modes during the 1950s-60s. Grace completed their second facility, and Neighborhood constructed an addition to the original fellowship hall and kitchen, plus a two-story education wing. Later, Grace Church housed a child care center for the community.
Many members from the two congregations were friends, most notably through participation in Boy Scouts, plus some other community organizations such as what is now the Roosevelt Women’s Club, formerly the original Ladies Aid Society of South Phoenix.
In 1992, these two congregations officially merged to become South Mountain Community Church. As a “federated church”, it is a member of two denominations: the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.
Currently SMCC hosts two other congregations in its facility: Gentle Shepherd Metropolitan Community Church and the Samoan Christian Mission of Arizona and is in a covenant relationship with Wesley United Methodist Church across the street.
SMCC seeks to continue the tradition set by the Neighborhood House almost 100 years ago: to offer God’s grace by providing space for families and organizations in the South Mountain Village to gather and grow.
Rich Doerrer-Peacock
God Bless the Folks at SMCC and God Bless America and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

Presidents Call to Service Award
Who knew the President gave out awards for picking up trash? I was honored and humbled recently on March 11th. 2011 by receiving an award for my work with The South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful for about the last 15 years. The credit really goes to a whole group of folks that through the years have volunteered their time and energy to help keep our Village clean. First of all I need to thank my Board of Directors, they have been there the clean ups (over 90 so far). They are Joe Banks, Joe and Pauline Tofoya, Carlie Back, James, Robert and Abel Young and Kay Shepherd. Also the great partners we have with: the City of Phoenix Police Department, Neighborhood Services Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Council Districts 7 and 8, Keep Phoenix Beautiful, Maricopa County District 5 and Wake-up Kids from local schools. A few of our sponsors have been, Wal Mart, Phoenix Ranch Market, IHOP and many more that I do not have room to mention. My appreciation also goes out to Phoenix Collegiate Academy, SABIS School, Maricopa County Probation Department and all the neighborhood associations that have volunteered their time and energy. Special thanks go to Tom Waldeck and Cindi Moss of Keep Phoenix Beautiful for submitting my nomination. “Have you picked yours today?” Trash that is!

Well folks we had another successful fundraiser at the fabulous Secret Garden for the South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful and South Mountain/Laveen Village’s Inc Committee. I have so many people to thank for helping with this special Appreciation Dinner. First let’s start with Family. Sometime the word “Family” is overlooked or underappreciated in this busy life style that many of us have. As most of you folks know I have a large and extended family. Once again this year they stepped up to the plate and worked very hard to make our annual event special. So, many thanks to my brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews for everything they do for me. I am so blessed to have them in my life.
Then there are my friends and our sponsors that without them we would not be able to have such a great event. Special thanks go to Dave and Nancy Mata, (the owners of the Secret Garden, and their Event Coordinator Jessie), for their vision, fortitude and financial investment in our Village, it would not have happened. Special thanks also goes out to Oregano’s Pizza Bistro and the owner Mr. Mark Russell and his excellent staff (Manuela) for catering our event. The community is looking forward at eating at Oregano’s located across the street from the Secret Garden. Another special thanks to all of the folks who attended and their generous donations. South Mountain Village, A Caring Community
Once again we have reached out to the less fortunate in our community. Some of the folks who have made a difference are Southern Baptist Temple Church and Americans for a Better Tomorrow, they hosted the 14th. Annual Holiday Fun Fest. There was food, entertainment, games and 1000 stockings filled with goodies that were sent home with the children.
Genie Mancuso distributed over 10,000 Christmas cards to shelters, family agency’s and prisons. Genie collects cards all year so people can have cards to send.
Church Women United collected baby layettes, baby items and toys for three Hospitals, and also blankets for the Central Arizona Shelter (CASS). Helping Hands Grandmothers Club delivered cards and gifts to a care center. Boxes were packed for Operation Christmas Child. The Roosevelt Women’s Club gave gifts to the Veterans Hospital and a Children’s Crisis Center. There are lots more, if your group, church or organization has a story, please send it to us and we can publish at a later date. It has been a Blessed Christmas and we are looking forward to a great New Year.
God Bless Verna

The Good Time Cruisers of Arizona
“Toyz for Totz”
The Good Time Cruisers of Arizona (GTCA) are always collecting “Toyz for Totz” for underprivileged children for Christmas. The GTCA is a car club that has for many years participated in “Toyz for Totz Cruise and Car Show. Toys are collected and purchased by the GTCA during the year. The toys are delivered to the “Cops Who Care” organization in Wickenburg. All of the toys are distributed to needy families in Maricopa and Yavapai counties. The South Mountian/Laveen Festival Committee would like to thank GTCA for participating in our 39th. Annual Festival of Thanksgiving Parade and Fair.
This year was another great year, we had a very successful run. For the ones that didn’t attend we had 301 cars and approximately 1200 people. The Cops Who Care were able to help approximately 675 children this year and we helped them make that possible.
Please contact Dick Sellers at Ace Auto Repair (602-268-0454) 5010 South Central Avenue (He can also help you with any automobile problems you have) or George Young (602-243-3162 or gayoung@cox.net or the GTCA at www.goodtimecruisersofaz.com
Please remember that many children benefit from this toy drive. God Bless The GTCA and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village. Thank You.
