Good Folks (Sept 11)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on September 6, 2011
By George Young – gayoung@cox.net
This is a series of articles profiling some of the residents who live and work in the South Mountain/Laveen Villages. In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us. There were a whole bunch of folks that came together to make the following possible. We thank them all.
There is a lady in our Village that I have the privilege of calling my friend and is one of the kindness people I know. You have seen her picture in the Villager for years and other print media in our Village. Maybe you have received one of her postcards. Maybe you have seen her at the annual Haunted Hayride, local parades, Pioneer luncheon, South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful event picking up trash or cooking or other local events. Maybe she has assisted you in buying or selling your property. Maybe you have seen her on the side of her company moving van. Yes, she has her own moving van that is available for folks to use if they are one of her clients and need a way to move their personal items after a purchase or sale of their home. It is also available for church’s and non-profits.
She has a very busy professional life, but somehow finds time to volunteer in our Village. She is on the Board of the South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful, Co, Treasurer (and yes she does pick up trash), a member of the South Mountain Community College Advisory Board, South Mountain/Laveen Chamber Advisory Board, was the president of the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber and has recently volunteered to join and support the South Mountain/Laveen Village Festival of Thanksgiving Committee and agreed to let the committee use space in her office building located at 3540 East Baseline for meetings and also her administrative staff for support. She has written many informative articles for the Villager and the South Mountain District News about real estate. She is well versed in short sales, bankruptcies, and anything that has to do with today’s ever changing real estate market.
She has lived in our Village about 20 years, in that time she has made a big difference in many folk’s lives. She graduated from ASU and about fifteen years ago started her own business. By now you probably have guess that I am talking about Mrs. Carlie Back, of the Carlie Back Team with Keller Williams Lifestyle Realty. You know the “How Fast Can You Say Sold” lady (602-305-9033 or go to her web site at www carlieback.com). I could write pages about Carlie, but unfortunately I have my print limitations.
Thank you Carlie for being my dear friend and for everything you do for our Village. God Bless the South Mountain Community College and the City of Phoenix and God Bless America and God Bless the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s.

Another Successful Fiesta of Independence (Aug 11)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on August 10, 2011
Another Successful Fiesta of Independence on July 4th. 2011
Arizona’s newest Americans hail from Canada and England, India and Nigeria, and 58 other countries. They speak a multitude of languages and ply a potpourri of trades. Some are here alone; others have large families. A few are newlyweds. But the estimated 300 people cheered, clapped and waved American flags after they were declared United States citizens Monday July 4th. 2011 during a ceremony at South Mountain Community College.
“I am happy,” said Victoria Kanu, 75, grinning from ear to ear.
She wore a red and white traditional Nigerian dress and sported large gold hoop earrings.
“I am very happy.”
Another newly minted citizen, Angelica Valdibia, 21, is from Mexico, as are a great number of the newest citizens.
“I am so proud to be an American,” Valdibia said. “I can vote!”
Valdibia and Kanu were among hundreds of new citizens, family members and friends who packed the auditorium for the 23rd annual Fiesta of Independence, held every year on the Fourth of July to celebrate citizenship.
“It is also significant for the people of Phoenix . . . to see how people take the legal steps to citizenship,” said John Kamar of U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Services. The newest Americans must be at least 18, have lived in the country at least five years and be “of good moral character.” They must read, write and speak English, and be familiar with U.S. government and history.
U.S. District Court Judge Earl Carroll urged the crowd to learn English well and participate in elections. The new citizens had a chance to register to vote at the end of Monday’s event. “You have the same rights and the same privileges as a citizen that I have,” Carroll said

SMV Fiesta of Independence (JUNE 11)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on May 31, 2011
South Mountain Village Fiesta of Independence
By George Young
Twenty-three years ago, a group of South Mountain Village residents and South Mountain Community College got together and decided to host a 4th. of July event for people wanting to become citizens. The College gym became a court room with an esteemed Judge and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services presiding. The first year fifty new citizens were sworn in, the numbers grew every year and one year we had four hundred and fifty and the Fire Department said that was too many as each person brings his own cheering section. So we cut back to three hundred and fifty and this year we will be doing two hundred and fifty. The event has become a community event and we average two thousand visitors. We have a speaker, sometimes from Washington D.C., a Color Guard, patriotic music and every candidate gets an American flag. There are refreshments following the program and mementos for the kids. This event is sponsored by the South Mountain Community College, South Mountain/Laveen Village Festival Inc., and South Mountain/Laveen Chamber of Commerce. What better way to celebrate our nation’s birthday than to welcome new citizens from over sixty countries to our diverse community.

Villages in Transition III (from the cover May 2011)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on May 1, 2011
“Villages in Transition III”
(By Annia Quiroz)
South Mountain Community College held the event “Villages in Transition III” on Friday, April 8 2011 to discuss issues like education, public safety and development in the community. The event started at 8 a.m. with introductions by Greg Brownell, Chair of the SMCC President’s Community Advisory Council and Justice of the Peace of the South Mountain Justice Court, Cody Williams who gave a historic overview of (South Mountain Village) south Phoenix.
There were three panels of experts which were open to questions and discussion from the audience. The first panel opened up the discussion of planning, geography and transportation, the second was education and the final was about public safety, the media and community image. A recurring theme among the panels was the great natural resources available and the need for the community to take advantage of them. A second one was the need to re-image or “brand” the community for its advantage.

A member of the first panel, Leslie Dornfeld, owner of PLAN-et and retired employee for the city of Phoenix, responded too many of the questions with suggestions for growth and expansion. “As a community we need to buy local. This market is a very unique market,” said Dornfeld.
The panel explained that (South Mountain Village) south Phoenix is just as important as north Phoenix or east Phoenix or any part of the valley, according to Dean Brennen, a retired City of Phoenix Village planner, who was part of the same panel.
The education panel brought to light the many great things the (South Mountain Village) south Phoenix communities have achieved. Mary Beyda, from the Roosevelt School district, told the audience of the recognitions and changes the district has achieved, like the “Kids at Hope” program and a new culinary school. Dr. Kent Scribner from the Phoenix Union High School district talked about his achievements with a new International Baccalaureate program. “We have to invest in the education community,” said Mrs. Josie Pete.
The last panel underlined the importance of re-branding the community with the help of Jason Rose, part of the Rose+Moser+Allyn PR Company. “There needs to be a goal of re-branding this community,” he said. “Unless you fundamentally change the image of the community nothing will change.”
A series of guest speakers were also part of the event sharing valuable information about the community, its history and leadership.
“There is passion in the people of the community and because of that passion of the people, great things can happen in this community,” said Greg Brownell.
