GIRL SCOUTS HOLD THEIR OWN TEA PARTY (July 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on July 2, 2011

GIRL SCOUTS HOLD THEIR OWN TEA PARTY

On May 7th. 2011 the Girl Scouts of the Mountain Rose Neighborhood of the Arizona Cactus Pine Council held their Mother-Daughter Tea Party at the Southern Baptist Temple on South Central Avenue.

The event was chaired by Jean Magley who spent several weeks preparing for the event by contacting local merchants who donated many of the needed supplies to make the event success. Local grocers who donated gift certificates were the three Fry’s Stores, Wal-Mart at 24th Street and East Baseline Road, Safeway. The local home supply stores, Home Depot and Lowes donated plants to help create a pleasant atmosphere. Jean had the support of other volunteers, who helped set the room up for the expected 100 guests. Kim Gammill helped with set-up and tear down. Jean even recruited her great grand-daughter Aubrey, who is planning to be a Daisy Girl Scout in a few months to help set the place settings. Among the things at each place setting was a small envelope designed as a Tea Pot, inside it was a tea bag and a short poem, also on each table were various styles of real tea pots.

I really miss you presence
I like to hear your views
I wish that we could visit
And catch up on the news

Since we can’t do that often,
The one thing that I can see
Is-we can dream together
And have a cup of tea

Jean also planned a Style Show in which 18 girls participated showing, not only their own pretty dresses, but Jean had borrowed several vintage uniforms from the local Arizona Cactus Pine Girl Scout Museum which some of the girls wore. Shelley Lear, council representative wore an official uniform from the past to show the younger ladies. One of the highlights of the Style Show was the presence of four Boy Scouts in uniform from Troop 208 with their Scout Commissioner, Burniece Lyttle, who acted as escorts to the girls as they walked down the runway. The girls enjoyed that and both boys and girls learned the proper way to act/be escorted. Some of the girls got to walk more than once. As each girl came down the runway, her name and a description of what she was wearing was announced over a speaker system by volunteer Theresa Baca, Jean announced he vintage clothing, describing them and the era that they were worn. Another one of Jean’s many volunteer helpers, Molly Kediri furnished piano music for the girls to walk by and another volunteer JoDee Krippene along with her daughter Alexis took pictures of the girls under an arch with ivy on it.

Jean had prepared a program for each guest which contained a list of the Leaders and their assistants for the 26 troops in the Mountain Rose Neighborhood. There was also a place for those attending to put their picture and to have a keepsake to remember the great time they had at the TEA TIME BONDING for Mother and Daughters.

SML Chamber (June 2010)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on May 29, 2010

A Word from the President

So many wonderful things are happening in South Mountain and Laveen.  In this spirit, I would like to take a moment to recognize two recent events involving our communities.

First, on May 4, the South Mountain Laveen Chamber of Commerce hosted our sixth annual Golf Shoot-Out at South Mountain.  Held at the Vistal Golf Club, one of South Mountain’s golf gems, the tournament afforded our communities the opportunity to mingle, play golf and raise money for the South Mountain Community College and the Girl Scouts Summer Camp Program.  In the previous five years, the tournament has raised more than $10,000 for a scholarship fund established to assist South Mountain residents attending the college and over $2,500 to help numerous girls attend the summer camp.  Many thanks to all who participated and made the tournament a success.

Second, on May 5, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce held its 2010 Impact Awards luncheon, during which the GPCC recognized enterprising business owners who have made an impact through community involvement, company culture, innovation, and response to adversity.  From among 70 applicants, the GPCC recognized South Mountain’s own RE/MAX New Heights Realty as the 2010 IMPACT Business of the Year.  Started in 2005 by Victor Vidales, RE/MAX New Heights Realty enjoyed its most profitable two years in 2008 and 2009 and continues to do well in a struggling real estate economy.

“It makes me very proud to be a small business owner in the South Mountain Village,” said Victor.  “To get this kind of recognition is not just beneficial to me but to all of South Mountain and the Laveen Village’s.  The fact that we are the first Latino-owned company to win the business of the year in the 23-year history of the IMPACT Award shows that we are reaching new heights in south Phoenix.”  Congratulations to Victor and his team for their continued excellence and their dedication to our communities.

Girl Scouts and AHS (Mar 2010)

Girl Scouts and Arizona Humane Society dedicate Equestrian Labyrinth

Girl Scouts-Arizona Cactus-Pine Council and the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) dedicated their newly built equestrian labyrinth at the Arizona Humane Society’s Nina Mason Pulliam Campus; locate at 1521 West Dobbins Road on Saturday February 20th. 2010.  During the event both children and adults enjoyed tours of the AHS facility, walked the equestrian labyrinth and participated in special activities to learn about choosing and caring for pets.  A local Girl Scout troop, which meets at the AHS, sold cookies.

At the labyrinth dedication ceremony, Girl Scouts lead and rode horses for the Dusty Boots Therapy program in the labyrinth.  The ceremony was conducted by special guest Taffy Lanser, a founder of the International Labyrinth Society.

Although commonly confused with mazes, labyrinths are not puzzles, there is only one path into the center where individuals enter and exit.  Labyrinths have been use as a reflection tool in the inner leadership development program at Girl Scout-Arizona Cactus-Pine Council.  In fact, girls in the council have helped build labyrinths at four of the council’s five camps, including a horse’s labyrinth like the one at the AHS.

Local Girl Scouts built the labyrinth at the AHS in cooperation with Dusty Boots Therapy, a unique program to assist individuals and families in overcoming physical, emotional and/or psychological barriers through various forms of interaction with horses.

Dusty Boots provides therapeutic riding instruction, equine assisted learning sessions, team building and life skills activities at the AHS.  Children and adult programs and events include individual and group riding classes, horsemanship, Veteran support sessions, education, animal care, leadership training, Special Olympics team training, after-school programs and day camps.

For more information about joining the Girl Scout programs in this area, contact Susan Chew Murphy at 602-228-6218 or email suanmurphy@girlscoutsaz.org.  For information about Dusty Boots Therapy programs at the AHS, contact Cathy Willmeng at dustyboots24@cox.net or 602-595-2040

Girl Scouts June 09

girlscoutsTo be a sister to every Girl Scout

This is part of the Girls Scouts law that is practiced within all of the troops under the Arizona Cactus Pine Council, which serves girls from all over the state.  These girls range from kindergarten to seniors in high school.

Some neighborhoods are every strong with a lot of troops and strong leadership.  Some troops have a lot of girls that benefit from being part of an organization that empower girls to be the best that they can be by developing self confidence, strong leadership skills and helping out in the community by doing service projects.

During the last few months, one particular area in Phoenix has joined forces to reflect the meaning “To be a sister to every girl scout”.  They brought together three neighborhoods to form the Greater ‘Phoenix, Communities (Mountain Rose Neighborhood, TAPOW Neighborhood and Hopi Neighborhood).  Under the guidance and support of Susan Murphy and Tania Grijalva, both Member Service Executive’s, these three Neighborhoods meet once a month sharing ideas and resources to better serve our girls.  On April 25th. 2009, we attended the annual meeting where two of the leaders, Shirley Hawkins and Grace Salinas, were recognized for their outstanding service to Girl Scouts.  On May 15th. The Greater Phoenix Communities had a bridging Ceremony at Camp Sombrero.  There were about 50 girls and their family members who joined us to celebrate each girl’s “right to passage” to the next level.  This ceremony is for girls to move from one level to the next according to their grade: for example – Daisy to Brownie, Brownie to Junior, Junior to Cadet, Cadet to Senior and Senior to Ambassador.

There are a lot of girls out there in need of a Great Leader who are willing to spend a few hours a month and help them develop the skills they have within.  If you are interested or know someone who is interested in becoming a Great Leader, please call Susan Murphy at 602-228-6218 or the Council Office at 602-253-6359

Girl Scout’s Trip Take Disney Wonder Cruise

Posted by South Mountain Villager on March 18, 2009

The hard work and dedication from selling Girl Scout cookies has finally paid off for the girls of Troop 436. For the past four years the girls worked diligently, planning the trip and managing the budget for their dream trip to take the Disney Wonder Cruise. The profits from selling cookies was their sole means of funding the trip which include airfare to Orlando, a one night stay at the Hyatt and the Disney Wonder Cruise. The cruise was three days and four nights with stops in the Bahamas and in Disney’s private Castaway Island. Fifteen Girl Scouts and seven parents took the trip.

Troop 436 is sponsored by Tanner Chapel AME Church and the girl scouts reside in various cities including Phoenix, Glendale and Tempe. The troop is in the Mountain Rose Neighborhood.

If anyone needs information on the joining the Girl Scouts please call the Girl Scout Council at 602-253-6359 or Susan Murphy at 602-228-6218
