Scooptacular (NOV 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on October 28, 2011

Scooptacular

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Scooptacular. We’ve been open for almost one and a half years at our easy accessible location in the Fry’s Parking lot next to Starbucks. In our first year we’ve made over 80 premium and specialty flavors including Thanksgiving Turkey and Play Ball – Hotdog, to our best sellers Oatmeal Cookie, Cookie Monster, Laveen Concrete Mix and Cookies & Cream.

May 4th we celebrated our 1st year as Laveen’s Ice Cream shop with $1.00 specials throughout the day with 100% of our total sales benefiting the Scooptacular college staff as scholarships. Over $1500 was raised that day!

In September, Scooptacular went bananas for books! We collected books to help add to the libraries of Eagle College Prep and Riverbend Prep. Every book that was brought in was redeemed for a free kids cone. Over 200 books were collected.

Scooptacular loves being a part of the community. In our first year we have been able to give back over $12,000 through our various fundraisers and partnerships that include churches, schools, and the American Cancer Society.

During our first year in Laveen we have added several items to our menu including Sundaes with your choice of toppings. Monsoons, our version of a hand spun milkshake. Shave Ice in 3 sizes, with 30 syrups that can make 100’s of flavor combinations including sugar free. We still make our waffle cones fresh daily.

Watch for Scooptacular at our schools, games, community events, and we look forward to seeing you in the store where we serve not just ice cream but “happiness in a cup.”

Take Pride in SMV (Aug 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on August 9, 2011

 Laveen Baptist Church

In April of 1939, a group of mission-minded members of the Central Baptist Church of Phoenix determined to begin a Sunday School at the Laveen Elementary School. Space in the school auditorium, now know as Building A, was leased and the mission began.

Local members enthusiastically enlisted in service to the mission and in the spring of 1941 the mission called its first pastor.  Dynamic leadership by inspired lay members and early pastors enabled the mission to grow.  Attendance grew to eighty-five persons.

In August of 1943 twenty-one members of Central Baptist were granted letters permitting them to organize a church.  Laveen Baptist Church became a reality.  Later that year, the church purchased land across the road from the school and the members constructed the first church building, capable of accommodating about sixty people.

Pastors, who were sacrificially dedicated to service, characterized the remainder of the 1940s.  They worked at secular jobs to support their ministry and their families.  Almost without exception their wives taught, led the music and formed women’s groups such as the Women’s Missionary Union.

Outreach by the members and solid scriptural preaching led to many being added to the church membership rolls.  A parsonage was constructed on the church grounds in 1948 and educational buildings were constructed in the 1950s. The work of the church continued through the period of the 1960s (when a second was built, which could accommodate 180 persons) and 70s, when we called our first full-time pastor.

Through the 1980s the church continued to grow and evolve.  This was a period of strengthening and reorganizing as the community was transitioning from an almost purely agricultural one to one of a mixed suburban makeup.  The activities of the church reached into the community and a full-time Youth Director and a paid Music Director were added to the church staff.

The church continued to grow and we reached a point in the last half of the 80s that necessitated planning for further improvement and enlarging of our facilities.  Planning and fund raising were undertaken for a larger sanctuary.

The early 1990s saw outreaches of the church extend to the foreign as well as the local mission field.  Missionary trips were made to Wales, the Ukraine, Brazil and Malawi and in the last decade to Thailand, Liberia, The Netherlands and Mozambique.  Members of the congregation gained insight and experience of the Lord’s work through participation in these missions.

In 1993 the church celebrated its 50th anniversary by having a groundbreaking ceremony for the new sanctuary, which would seat 400 persons.  In 1997 the number of baptisms into the church doubled over the previous year as the population of the community continued to grow rapidly.  The new sanctuary was completed in 1998.

The beginning of the building boom of the 2000s led the church to plan for further growth.  We have just completed a new education and office complex, replacing the old structures from the 40s and 50s to minister to the growing population of Laveen.  We are enjoying a growth spiral challenging us to new horizons.

This year, 2011, we are celebrating our 68th Anniversary.

Laveen Lions (July 11)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on July 3, 2011

Community needs never stop, and we don’t either. As this is being written fire is still raging in the northeastern part of our state after having already consumed nearly 400,000 acres of Laveen Lionsbeautiful pine forests and meadows. Many families have been forced to evacuate their homes. Some have been living in the area for as many as five generations. Lions from all over Arizona, including Laveen Lions Club, are already working at providing help to those who have been affected by this tragedy. Lions Clubs International is even part of the solution by helping with funds for Lions here on local ground to be able to provide food, shelter, clothing and any other direct needs these fire victims may have.
Lions work locally, in their neighborhoods and states. Plus they assist other Lions to help on National and International levels as well. Right here this summer your local Laveen Lions Club is gathering school supplies to fill the backpacks they will provide those students in greatest need at each of the schools in Laveen School District as the new school year begins in early August. They are getting their hearing equipment calibrated and their vision equipment checked to be ready to start vision and hearing screenings at all six Laveen schools in the first quarter of this coming school year. They are helping families with physically and mentally challenged members to get those who will be attending the Lions Camp Tatiyee ready for this special summer camping experience, at no cost to these families. And the Laveen Lions Club committees for this coming year (our Lions year starts on July 1) are meeting and making plans to raise funds, put on a parade, and serve those in need in our community throughout this coming year.
Yes, the Laveen Lions are celebrating their summer, not by leaving home, but my serving at home. Our lives are filled with blessings from those we get to touch in so many meaningful ways. If you would like the opportunity to be part of these types of activities, please contact Lion Les Daviet II at (602) 525-2377 or by e-mail at LesDavietII@cs.com and use the subject heading Laveen Lions.

Cowboy Tony (May 2011)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on April 24, 2011

Cowboy Tony

My friend Anita at the Del Monte Market sent me this info.  Thought I would pass it on to the Village Folks.  We did a story on him last year and now there is a permanent memory of him.

Cowboy Tony was 78 years old when he passed away on July 16th 2010.  He was a horse breaker, horseshoer and wrangler, also known as a vaquero.  Laveen’s beloved icon is truly missed by all at the Del Monte Market.

We have a young artist in our Village named Joey Sauceda, he is 19 years old, born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona.  Lived in the South Mountain/Laveen area most of his life.  Joey has been drawing since he was 6 years old.  His specialty was cartooning, he then moved onto Urban Art, and Realistic Art.  Joey can be reached on facebook.com/crash91.

Recently Joey the created a mural of Tony on a wall by the Del Monte Market at 27th. Avenue and West Dobbins Road in honor of Cowboy Tony.  Attached are a few pictures of the wall.  As you can see Joey is a very talented artist.

Healthy Habits (Nov 10)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on November 5, 2010

HEALTHY HABITS by Misty La Salvia

What’s new that’s healthy and happening in the South Mountain area?

Well, for starters, this exciting new “HEALTHY HABITS” column in our beloved South Mountain Villager, where we’ll be bringing you the healthy things happening in the area, and discussing topics that are intended to enrich the body, mind, spirit and hopefully lead us on a happier, more fulfilled, fit, purposeful lifestyle.

What else is new?

LAVEEN GREEN- Their motto- “Good for the Community” – Is happening and brand new. I asked one of the founders, me, “What got it all started?” And I replied “Some areas of Laveen are still county and do not offer recycling service, so, rather than driving around trying to find recycling, or adding to the land fill, we brought it home to Laveen.”

We believed there were enough people in the area wanting to make a difference. The first three families I mentioned it to joined in, then, my good neighbor and friend, Mr. Phil Van Dyke, stopped by to say “Hi”

and I asked if he liked our new recycling bin, he then got out of his truck and took out a big piece of cardboard from the back, and said he had been planning to drop it off at recycling. It’s so satisfying to be working towards a good cause, but it’s a thrill when others get involved, then it becomes limitless; just a recycling bin today, but who knows what ideas someone might bring to it tomorrow.

I do have to admit though, what also helped to push the cause was when I was talking with a dear friend, Maureen Davies, who is originally from England, and I mentioned my dilemma on recycling, she told me that in England, everyone drives to take their recycling in, it’s just part of their lifestyles. Well, then it just wasn’t “I”

can make a difference, it became “Oh no “Team America” is not going to be shown up.” (A little healthy competition is good too. In conclusion, does Laveen Green offer healthy habits?

Recycling- Healthy for environment, Farmers market- healthy on your diet, Volleyball- healthy on your physical fitness, all of it- healthy for your community, state of mind, and you’re “feel good” endorphins. Yes, Laveen Green is a healthy habit!

Quote for the month

“We lose vigor through thinking continually the same set of thoughts. New thought is new life.”

Restaurant Review (Nov 10)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on November 5, 2010

Memphis Best BBQ

Chelsey Heath

cfheath@asu.edu

Memphis BBQ Following family tradition, Darryl Alexander decided to get into the restaurant industry after a 22-year stint as a Marine. After five years of research and planning, Alexander brought the Memphis Best BBQ brand to Arizona, opening up his first location in Buckeye at 608 E. Monroe Ave.

Now, he celebrates his one-year anniversary at the second location in the Laveen Village Center at 6260 South 35th Avenue in Laveen.

Alexander said he concentrates on keeping a great staff and establishing a family atmosphere. He recently reopened the Buckeye location after finding staff that had a passion for food that they could share with the customers. Local police officers stop in for lunch every day at the Laveen location, and regulars come in every week.

He added that everyone approaches BBQ with the expectation that it taste like what they grew up with, but even when people debate or discuss different types of BBQ, he’s happy that everyone enjoys eating it at the end of the day.

The rest of Memphis Best’s menu is based on their stellar sandwiches, made Memphis-style with coleslaw and their family recipe BBQ right on top of the smoked meat. My dining guest and I sampled both the chopped park shoulder and beef brisket, which were equally delicious with even more slaw or a side of mac n’ cheese to round out the meal.

The best part is the price – the lunch special includes either sandwich, one side, and a medium drink for around $6.

Other treats include BBQ spaghetti ($7.40), a full plate of rib tips ($8.80), and homemade peach cobbler ($4.25). For families, Memphis offers three sizes of dinners including meat of choice, sauce, buns, sides, and bread.

Call (602) 268-9545 or visit http://www.bestbbqofmemphis.com/ for more information. Memphis Best also caters.

LAVEEN LIONS CLUB NEWS

“Pennies from Heaven”

by Lion Jerry Cook

The Laveen Lions will kickoff their 3rd Annual Penny Drive October 11th thru November 5th. The pennies collected will be used for their Holiday Food Basket/Gift Program which the club has been involved in for several decades. (last year 50 families were supported!)

The six elementary schools in the Laveen district will be competing against each other and the class at each school collecting the most pennies will be awarded a pizza party.

The club will be involved in numerous activities in the next few months, i.e., Phoenix Int’l Raceway (NASCAR), holiday baskets, troop holiday card signing, social outings, parades, vision/hearing screenings, bike ride, golf tournament, and other fun things to do.

To be a part of this dynamic group (meets 1st/3rd Thursdays of the month at the Bouganvillea Golf Clubhouse – 7 p.m.), call Lion Honolu Tatrai at (602) 237-4907.

Talking about money . . . If you have 3 quarters, four dimes, and four pennies, you have $1.19. You also have the largest amount of money in coins without being able to make change for a dollar (good to know).
