Roosevelt School District leading the way in healthy food choices

Salad Bars have long been an offering in the food service industry; however most people are accustomed to seeing them in restaurants, not a school lunch program. Roosevelt School District is no stranger to the salad bar program and has offered them for the past five years in all 20 of their school cafeterias. The program has always been well received by the community.

During the summer, the Roosevelt School District upgraded their Salad Bars with new looks and more choices to meet the changing needs of the children participating in the National School Lunch Program. Roosevelt’s Chef Jim Hemmen felt the timing was right to launch an upgrade; the finances were available to purchase new and updated salad bars for all schools thus creating an opportunity to increase the variety of fresh fruits and vegetable choices daily. The biggest motivator was the ability to continue the quest to improve the quality of the meal program for everyone.

With First Lady Michelle Obama promoting the “Let’s Move” campaign nationwide, attention to school lunches are at an all-time high. “Eating more fruits and vegetables,re-vamping  USDA recommended dietary guidelines and increased physical activity are no longer buzz words, they are mainstream ideals for change in the way our young people are educated and raised”, said Chef Hemmen. That was evident recently at a national convention where the focus and training on the subject accounted for 80 percent of the agenda. The Child Nutrition climate is changing daily and the best operators are becoming extremely innovative in their programs.

Tax credits provide RSD students with a well-rounded education and extracurricular activities

It’s not too late to get your tax credit for 2010.

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax amount owed. For example, if you owe $800 in state income taxes and you donate $400 to a public school for extracurricular activities, you may subtract the $400 from your tax bill and pay the state just $400. If you anticipate a refund from the state, it would increase by the amount of your contribution, assuming you had that amount withheld.

According to state law, these donations must be used for extracurricular activities. With your help, Roosevelt School District is able to offer tutoring, band, music, art, recreational activities, and much more. Extracurricular activities help children develop qualities such as leadership, team play, and cooperation, as well as provide safe, supervised activities after school hours. Thanks to you, these programs could be available to all Roosevelt students.

All Arizona taxpayers are eligible to take advantage of this tax credit regardless of whether or not they have children in our schools. A married couple filing jointly may contribute and receive a tax credit up to $400. A single individual may contribute up to $200. Donations must be received by December 31 in order to be eligible for the tax credit this calendar year. A receipt will be provided for tax purposes.

For more information, call 602-243-4800 or visit our website at www.rsd.k12.az.us to download a copy of our tax credit brochure.

Roosevelt School District Receives Grants

The US Department of Education has approved 50 library grants nationwide and Roosevelt School District is one of them. The Roosevelt School District will receive $546,110 for six of our school libraries (Valley View, Southwest, C.J. Jorgensen, Amy Houston, Cloves Campbell and Brooks Academy). The Roosevelt School District received the fourth largest award of the 50 grants. The grant includes funding for librarians at these schools to extend the library hours and provide family literacy evenings. The grant also includes the following for each school: interactive white board, laptop computer, Smart slates, Smart student response system, document projection camera, overhead projector, Mac computer, student computer work stations, computer furniture, iPods, iPads, digital camera, eBooks, interactive books, digital audio books, between 1,000 and 1,200 hardback books for each library and curriculum-related DVD’s. In addition, the U.S. Department of Education has announced that 49 districts, schools, and nonprofits beat out more than 1,600 other applicants in the competition for $650 million in grants from the Investing in Innovation or i3 fund. Four groups won what are known as “Scale Up” awards worth up to $50 million each. The Baltimore-based Success for All Foundation applied for $49 million to work in 19 school districts across the nation. The Roosevelt Elementary District is one of the 19 districts nationwide and the only Arizona district to be included in the grant. As a result of our partnership in this grant, the Roosevelt School District will receive $600,000 over the next five years. The Roosevelt School District is very excited for this great opportunity for our schools and its children.

Roosevelt School District Gives Brand New Netbook Computers to All 7th and 8th Graders at Four Schools

21st Century Classrooms Project Approved for $365,779

Phoenix, AZ – On Monday, August 2, 2010 the Roosevelt School District distributed brand new Netbook Laptop computers to 7th and 8th graders at John R. Davis School in South Phoenix. Davis was just one of four schools selected in the Roosevelt School District whereby all 7th and 8th graders in those schools received the computers. The other Roosevelt Schools are Cesar Chavez, V.H. Lassen and Valley View.

Last March, the Arizona State Board of Education approved the Roosevelt School District’s 21st Century Classrooms grant proposal. This project is funded through the 2009-2011 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT—Title IID). The grant awarded $365,799 to integrate technology into Roosevelt’s classroom instruction.

In addition, each classroom in those four schools will have a teacher laptop computer for instruction, digital projectors and document cameras to display information, white boards for interactive presentations, and flip-video cameras to make movies for projects.

The goal of this project is to increase student achievement through the use of technology in the classroom. Teachers will get special training and professional development to plan high quality lessons utilizing the new technology. In addition, each campus will have a technology coach who will help teachers and students maximize their use of technology. Students will learn about internet safety and how to evaluate the reliability of information found on the world wide web.

Roosevelt has made significant investments in technology over the past few years. More than 250 interactive whiteboards have been installed. All campus sites are being wired for WI-FI internet access, and the District has invested in a high speed LAN system and network infrastructure offering greater bandwidth.

Roosevelt Provides Free Meals & Immunizations for Community Children

It takes a lot to keep children healthy.  In a tough economy with many people out of work, it is nice to know that families can rely on the Roosevelt schools to provide help for their children.  That is why we want the community to know about two unique programs being offered.  First, Roosevelt is providing a free “Summer Meal Program” for all children.  Second, the School District continues to offer a free immunization clinic.

This summer the Roosevelt School District is serving over 25,000 free lunches.  The District’s Child Nutrition Services Department is offering healthy balanced meals to any child under the age of 18 (Children do not need to be enrolled with Roosevelt as students to receive free meals through this program).  These high quality meals will be provided 4 days a week (Monday–Thursday from June 16 through July 17).

Both breakfast and lunch will be available at 12 school locations.  Black, Bush, Campbell, Chavez, Conchos, and Jorgenson will serve children free breakfast from 7:00 am to 8:00 am and free lunch from 11:00 am to12:00 pm.  Lassen, Pastor, Rose Linda, Sierra Vista, Southwest, and Valley View will serve children free breakfast from 7:30 am to 8:30 am and free lunch from 11:30 am to12:30 pm.  All children are welcome.

Roosevelt’s “Summer Meal Program” is part of a larger nationally funded and state operated program to ensure that no child goes hungry.   The United State Department of Agriculture sponsors the program as a way to partner with local communities.

“Children are always growing, so we can’t afford to take the summer off with regards to nutrition.  I am excited to be providing such high quality meals for free through our community schools,”  said Jim Hemmen, Roosevelt’s “Top Chef” and Child Nutrition Supervisor.

Eating good food is just part of keeping children healthy.  Families know another way to protect children is to immunize them from diseases.  So the Roosevelt School District has been providing immunizations to the children in our community, for free, for many years now.

This past school year, the district provided 1,187 immunizations to 424 children.  Retired Roosevelt School District Nurse Hordis (Jordy) Wallace has enabled us to keep our clinic up and running all these years.  We are very thankful for all she has and continues to do to keep our children properly immunized.

Roosevelt’s immunization clinic is run out of the Student Support Services building (located at 6218 S. 7th St., Phoenix, AZ. 85042).  The free immunization clinic will begin again on July 28.  Roosevelt will be accepting walk in patients on July 28 and 29 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and July 30th from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm.  The week of August 2-4, we will be open 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.  After that, the free immunization clinic will be open every Tuesday (2:00 pm – 4:30 pm) and Wednesday (8:00 am – 10:00 pm),  except during school holidays.

School Music Programs March Forward with Help

from the Phoenix Fire Department and Ear Candy

What comes to mind when you see emergency trucks racing down the road with flashing lights and blaring sirens?  Usually, when a fireman shows up it means somebody is in trouble. Either a home or business is on fire, or a person is seriously ill or injured.

However, it turns out that firemen help rescue lots of people and things in jeopardy.  Throughout the month of March the Phoenix Fire Department is helping to save instrumental music programs in the Roosevelt schools.  They are partnering with Ear Candy to collect used instruments for the Roosevelt schools music programs.

Because of the current budget crisis music programs normally get cut first by most other school Districts.  Fortunately, Roosevelt has very strong choral and instrumental music programs in the schools.  With the help of organizations such as Ear Candy and the Phoenix Fire Department, the District continues to offer these diverse performing arts experiences for our children.

Ear Candy is a Phoenix-based non-profit organization devoted to providing children access to music education.  To date, they have helped thousands of students by supporting in-school music programs through instrument donations, creating after school programs with community partners, and offering unique Beyond-the-Classroom opportunities (such as concerts and workshops with world renowned artists).

The Phoenix Fire Department wants to be engaged in the community.  So recently Ear Candy and the Roosevelt School District launched their instrument drive with a kick-off event at Phoenix Fire Station #4.  The Valley View Elementary School marching band performed with 55 students.  Band director Eddie Gaona said, “this a tremendous opportunity for the community to support music in our schools.”

Frank Solomon, Deputy Assistant Chief of the Phoenix Fire Department, noted that “all 55 fire stations across the City of Phoenix will collect instruments for Roosevelt.”

Nate Anderson (Founder, President, and CEO of Ear Candy) was “excited to help continue Roosevelt’s vibrant music programs.”

Ms. Betty Ware (Clerk of  the Roosevelt’s Governing Board of Education) and Dr. Jacqueline Jackson (Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning) both thanked Ear Candy and the Phoenix Fire Department for their support of music in our schools.

To learn more about the instrument drive for Roosevelt, including locations and what to donate, please visit   www.EarCandyCharity.ORG for more information.

Roosevelt School District

Innovative Educator Joins Roosevelt Team

District Welcomes Dr. Jacqueline Jackson as New

Associate Superintendent of Teaching & Learning

Phoenix, AZ – Recently, the Roosevelt Elementary School District welcomed Dr. Jacqueline Jackson with a Community Breakfast.  The event was hosted by the P.R. Club at the V.H Lassen School.

Dr. Jackson will serve as the District’s new Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.  She has won numerous awards, honors, and recognition for her outstanding work as an educator.  Her credentials include a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, a Masters of Educational Administration from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Chicago State University.  Teaching in Illinois, Arkansas, and Arizona, Dr. Jackson has experience working with children from grades K-12.  She also has school leadership and district administration experience as a principal at multiple sites and directing the Title I Federal Grant Programs in the Washington Elementary School District.

The Arizona Cardinals Preparatory Academy is a good example of Dr. Jackson’s innovative leadership.  Under her guidance the school maintained smaller class sizes and extended additional learning opportunities for students.   She also developed partnerships with the University of Phoenix, Arizona Cardinals Football Club, and Communities in Schools.  These partnerships allowed for special enrichment programs and parent involvement, making the school a family center for education.

With her research on professional learning communities in high and low performing schools, it was fitting that Dr. Jackson’s  welcome ceremony was hosted at the P.R Club.  “Positive Reflections” is an extra-curricular entrepreneurial program at the Lassen School that has been operating for over 20 years in the Roosevelt School District.  Students earn a food handlers card, figure out budgeting for the bakery, and balance the restaurant’s check book.  Middle school children from 5th-8th grade learn money management while delivering a tasty product and friendly service every Friday morning from 7-8am.

Dr. Jackson stated that “The P.R. Club is a model program which encourages independent thinking.  I am excited to be in a leadership role in the Roosevelt School District; working with a progressive, innovative, and collaborative team of educators and support staff to ensure that all students receive exceptional learning experiences.  I look forward to meeting and engaging with students, staff, parents, and community members across the District.”

We welcome Dr. Jackson, and look forward to her tour of community events throughout the Roosevelt School District over the next few months.

All 3 of these poems were awarded national “golden keys” by Scholastic magazine and the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.  During the 2008-9 school year competition only 1,000 out of 140,000 submissions received this distinction.  These students attend C.J. Jorgenson and worked with Mr. Ryan Tritch, their teacher, in the “Unheard” writing club, which also publishes a local literary magazine.

Is It Our Fault?

By Jovanna Figueroa

The roar of the airplanes as they soar,

Technology,

The elegant architecture,

Humans,

Both things great,

But nothing compares to the purity of

Nature.

As I sit here on this beautiful metamorphic rock,

I see the surrounding mountains.

They create a trench

These mountains are powerful warriors,

Where only peace and love are allowed in.

A bee buzzes by gently,

It sits on a rock,

A wisdom filled rock,

With no facials or make-up,

All natural.

I look out,

Trying to find a world with no war,

With no destructive decisions,

A world without hate,

Without jealousy,

Where desire doesn’t overpower,

An Earth without pollution,

Without global warming,

Without humans.

Animals would run freely,

Plants would grow over wildly,

Land would increase secretly,

But our curious Earth would have never known the power of Love!

Here, the sky can’t meet the ground,

A big murky streak blocks their touch,

All our dumb decisions,

Our apathy,

Our lonely hearts desperate to be heard and in need of love.

We are vulnerable to desire,

Our first impulse betrays us,

And we destroy.

I felt immersed in shadow, in the darkness

And loneliness. Summoned by everything and

Everyone.  In a war between relaxation,

Time, and joy to myself.  It was like I was working in fields,

The bosses yelling out, ―work, work, work!  Don’t stop!  No time

For chit-chat!  Go!  Go!

But then I woke, saw myself in calm,

Warm sunsets.

Even the birds looked down at the earth,

Forecasting

A cool evening.  A life,

That, like the expressions on one’s face, is ever-

Changing, can be treasured as memories

Unique and valuable.

Just afraid

Just boring

Shoot

Even exciting,

But you get the picture

It’s not how,

But what;

Not what,

Take that scarf

Off

Your eyes

And see the world

As it truly is.

The Good Folks of South Mountain/Laveen Villages

This is a series of articles profiling some of the residents who live and work in the South Mountain Village.  In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us.

New Superintendent Inspires Roosevelt Schools to Succeed

Mary Beyda PhotoMary Beyda hit the ground running as the Roosevelt School District’s new Interim Superintendent in July.  After only two months in her new position, amazing things are happening.  She formerly served as Roosevelt’s Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.  In that position she was responsible for building a great team, strategically planning how Roosevelt would move forward academically, and practically implementing most of the programs that are now showing great results across the District.

One example of her impact is the $1 million competitive grant for 21rst Century Community Learning Centers, which was recently awarded to Roosevelt.  The grant provides extensive tutoring and academic clubs in reading, writing, math, and science for grades 1 through 3.  It also includes special interest clubs in physical activities, art, music, and dance.  In addition, there is a very strong child – parent – family component.

In another instance, Superintendent Beyda rallied over 1,200 employees at Roosevelt’s Annual Welcome Back Ceremony held in the South Mountain School Auditorium on July 28.  She announced the new AZ Learns labels which are based on the AIMS tests:  Over 95% of the District’s schools earned the label of “performing” and more than 60% were rated in the “performing plus” category.  On average, across all grade levels tested (compared to 2008), for 2009 Roosevelt students scored 9% better in math and 10% better in reading on the AIMS tests.

However, these successful trends are not new for Superintendent Beyda.  She has a solid track record of excellent performance guiding the Alhambra School District as an Assistant Superintendent for 10 years.  Before that she served 10 years as a principal and administrator in the Washington School District.  Beyda’s schools were singled out for national recognition by the First President Bush, and went from the worst in the District to the best after only 2 years.  As a teacher for 10 years, she regularly turned struggling students into lifelong readers.  Superintendent Beyda has also taught graduate level courses to teachers in education content and curriculum development at Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University West.

Mary Beyda has a passion for education.  You might even say it is in her blood.  When she was a child growing up in Arizona, she would play school with her friends and 3 brothers, using the family carport near Grand Avenue to conduct classes.  Her father was a high school and college math instructor, and her mother eventually went back to school and became a teacher, too.  In 8th grade Beyda’s English teacher exposed her to great literature.  ”Reading those books was life changing, and it opened up a whole other world for me,” Superintendent Beyda recalls.  ”I want every one of our students in Roosevelt to have that kind of opportunity,” she notes.

With 3 children and 6 grandchildren, Superintendent Beyda understands that parents expect educators to care as much about the students as they do.  That is why the Roosevelt School District has adopted a new mantra:  Everyone is committed to every student, in every classroom, on every day!  “We should never settle for anything less than giving our very best because education is personal, and every child is important,” says Beyda.

Over the next school year Roosevelt’s Governing Board will be searching for a permanent successor to Superintendent Beyda.  The community will be involved in every step of this process.  Until then, we welcome Beyda’s energy, hard working ethic, enthusiasm for learning, spirit of teamwork, and persistent dedication to student achievement.

Roosevelt Superintendent Dowling Retires!

DowlingDr. Mark Dowling, Superintendent of the Roosevelt Elementary School DSC00697District since 2005, retired at the end of June.  After 25 years of service to Roosevelt, he is moving to California to be closer to his 7 children and 10 grandchildren.  When he is not busy mending fences or irrigation systems on the family ranch, he also plans to enjoy more time riding his horses.

Growing up in Indiana, Dowling was influenced by his both his family’s rural farming roots and its international travels to Spain and Morocco.  His mother taught French and Spanish, while his father ran the foreign student exchange program at Indiana University (after working in the U.S. State Department).  Dowling was always close to animals and nature, good with languages, exposed to cosmopolitan cultures, and surrounded by educators.  His childhood was also filled with tragedy when his mentally handicapped sister died, after 12 years of family struggles to get help for her.  “That is probably one the main reasons I became a teacher–to make things better for other families,” noted Dowling.

After high school, Dowling served 1 year in the U.S. Marines before being honorably discharged for medical reasons.  Upon finishing his bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Indiana University, he actually taught in a one room school house near Bloomington.  Next, Dowling moved to Oregon where he carved wood and made children’s toys, in addition to earning a master’s degree in special education at Southern Oregon University.  “I had my first real connection with a mentally handicapped student in the cafeteria at the Jackson County School System in Oregon” he recalled.  This was the first of many student success stories for Dowling.

Fortunately for Roosevelt, Dowling moved to Arizona and started teaching special education at Rose Linda School in 1983.  Eventually, his teaching peers from the Roosevelt Education Association selected him to negotiate on their behalf.  In 1988 Dowling’s mentor, Dr. Eddie Lewis (former principal at M.O. Bush School), suggested he work on his administrator’s credential with Northern Arizona University.  By 1990, Dowling had shifted to bilingual instruction with fourth graders at John R. Davis School, where his students performed a bilingual opera about preventing AIDS.  He also sponsored the student council and created a newspaper writing club which published bilingual monthly editions.

From 1995 to 1999, Dowling was the principal at C.O. Greenfield School.  He got parents involved with the school uniforms policy, fostered an atmosphere of collaboration among his colleagues, and reduced discipline problems with a “zero tolerance” policy.  In 2000, Dowling moved into District administration as the Director for Special Needs.  A year later, he earned his Doctorate in Education from Arizona State University.  Then Dr. Dowling served as Roosevelt’s Assistant Superintendent of Special Needs until 2005.

Looking back over his career, Dowling said “I am extremely proud of the community and our people.  They have regained their self-confidence and solidarity.  The only legacy I want is for Roosevelt to keep believing in itself.”  Going forward he expects Roosevelt’s students to continue to make exceptional academic progress.  Dowling opines that leading a school district is not unlike running a successful classroom:  It is all about maintaining self control and not being distracted from the main task–student achievement!  “My best memories of Roosevelt are all of the incredible people I have worked with over the years, and I will miss them the most.”  As Superintendent Dowling rides into the sunset, we say “Thank You!”

YOUTH TOWN HALL CONFERENCE

Posted by South Mountain Villager on May 1, 2009

Southwest Behavioral Health, Community Youth Development Program is organizing its first Youth Town Hall conference. This free event will be held on May 5th, 2009 at South Mountain Community College, from 3pm-5.30pm. The theme for this year’s conference is “Marijuana and Its Consequences”. All students currently enrolled in the Roosevelt School District (RSD) grades 6th through 8th are welcome to attend this event. Attendance will be on first come first served basis, since the space is limited to a hundred participants. This is a great opportunity for youth to learn more about the risks and consequences of using marijuana.

The conference will consist of three different workshops led by speakers with different areas of expertise:

-          The Drug Enforcement Agency, DEA agent, Roderick Garza will lead a workshop on the effects marijuana has on the South Mountain Community,

-          A Not my Kid advocate will share personal testimony and implications of drug abuse on individual and family,

-          Arizona Department of Juvenile Court representative will focus on legal consequences.

Closing remarks will be led by active Peer Leaders from the RSD who will present their involvement in the Safe and Drug free South Mountain Coalition.  The Youth Town Hall conference is made possible by the founding and donations of Magellan of Arizona, South Mountain Community College and the Roosevelt School District.

Seeking solutions, Creating Change

Southwest Behavioral Health Services (SBH) is community-based agency that provides behavioral health services to individuals and families throughout the valley for over 30 years. Some of the services include outpatient, community integration, crisis recovery and community services.

Community services, as division of SBH, provides prevention and early intervention, care for children, youth, adolescents, adults and families through a variety of programs. Such as FAST (Families and Schools Together), LST (Life Skills Training), Bullying Prevention, PART (Peace and Respect Together), Second Step, Guiding Good Choices, Project Alert and CYDP (Community and Youth Development Program).

CYDP provides youth and their families with fun and interactive opportunities for life-long growth and development through activities that are designed to challenge and support youth. Through such, youth gains and enhances the skills needed to achieve today and in their future.
