What’s Happening In The South Mountain/Laveen Village’s

George A. Young – gayoung@cox.net

Well Folks remember; “Smile when you answer the phone.  The caller will hear it in your voice.

The South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful (SMVC&B) would like to hear from you if you would like to have us assist you in cleaning up your neighborhood or would like to join us in a clean up.    For information on the South Mountain Village Planning Committee agenda please contact the City of Phoenix Planning Department.  Our planner is Josh Bednarek at (602-261-8771) e-mail or joshua.bednarek@phoenix.gov.  To inquire about developments in the South Mountain/Laveen Village please e-mail or call George at (602-243-3162).  Below is a place that if you have not been you should plan on going.  Mr. Mel Martin has created a one of kind experience.  Mr. Al Ramsey sent me an e-mail about a new Laundromat located in the shopping center at the SWC of South Central and West Baseline Road.  Mr. John Parker is the manager and Al wanted folks to know how nice it is.  Stop by and use them.   Thanks Al.  We have a correction from our November issue.  The St. Luke’s article mistakenly stated that the “Introduction of One World, One Heart” was written by Susan Polis Schutz.  It was actually from “Leap of Faith” by Bobbie Holaday.

Martin Auto Museum Now open to the Public Thursday, Friday & Saturday’s, 12pm to 6pm

The formerly private Martin Auto Museum has just announced that it will now open its doors to the public every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 noon to 6pm beginning on Friday October 28th 2011, (which coincidently happens to be my birthday, thank you very much). Organized back in 2005, the Martin Auto Museum Inc. was created by Arizona entrepreneur Mel Martin to showcase his private collection of vintage vehicles and is now registered with the IRS as a 501(c) 3 non-profit “dedicated to the preservation of collectible and rare automobiles for educational purposes.”

As his collection continued to grow and the building expanded, Mel saw a need to share this collection of vehicles that represented significant periods in automotive history. At the Martin Auto Museum, visitors can view automotive history through the decades in this vast collection. There are also enough race cars and one-of-a-kind vehicles to excite any automotive, art or history enthusiast. In addition to the collection, there is lots of meeting space available for groups of up to 120 people. It is the perfect “centrally located” place to hold car club meetings or any special event in. Check it out.

The Martin Auto Museum is located at 17641 North Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix Az 85023. Just go north off of Bell Road on the east-side of I-17′s Frontage Road until you see the MMA Museums sign. If you are familiar with “Grumpy’s” vintage parts over there along the I-17 east-side Frontage Road, Mel’s place is just two buildings south of Grumpy’s. The Martin Auto Museum phone number is (602) 971-4753 and their fax number is (602) 971-4836. You can also e-mail Mel at: melcarup@aol.com and the MMA Museums web site is at: www.martinautomuseum.org/

What’s Happening In The South Mountain/Laveen Village’s

George A. Young – gayoung@cox.net

“Well Folks remember; Some doctors say that cheerful folks resist disease better than grumpy ones.”

This month I want to mention a little about our Village.  The South Mountain Village (SMV) extends from the Rio Salado to the South Mountain Park Preserve, the largest municipal park in the country and 48th. Street on the east and 27th. Avenue on the west.  From the ridge line of South Mountain to farm fields and urban neighborhoods, the village offers many different living environments.  Although containing established neighborhoods, SMV is in many ways a young, developing area.  The core of the village is in the vicinity of Central Avenue and the Salt River.  Significant concentrations of employment are also being created in the northeast portion of the village.  This area is accessible from the Maricopa Freeway and is close to Sky harbor International Airport.  The intensification is being balanced by quality residential and commercial development near the foothills of the South Mountain.  The image of SMV is strengthened by its rural atmosphere and its feeling of open space.  Many of the distinct features of the village are:  The Mountain Preserve, foothills and agricultural areas that serve as additional area of interest within the village.  Emphasis is directed toward maintaining and enhancing these areas.  The Rio Salado provides a unique opportunity to develop its potential recreational aspects.  Leisure time activities include hiking, horseback riding, biking and visiting the Audubon Society.  The rural and open character of the village will be further enhanced by maintaining and attracting quality foothill development, such as the Baseline Road and Dobbins Scenic drives.  Please take some time and enjoy our Village.  It is truly a great place to live, work and play.

The South Mountain Village Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday, 8th. 2011 at 6:30 PM at the South Mountain Community College, 7050 South 24th. Street, Student Union Building.

The Target Area B Citizens Action Committee will meet on Wednesday, November 30th.  2011 at 6:30 PM at the Travis L. Williams Family Services Center, 4732 South Central Avenue.

The South Mountain/Laveen Village Festival Committee will meet on Tuesday, November 1st.  2011 at 4 PM at 3540 E. Baseline Rd.

South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful Committee will meet on Wednesday, October 26th. 2011 at 4 PM at the Heritage Neighborhood Resource building on 2405 East Broadway Road.

Phoenix’s vast network of desert preserves and hiking trails has earned the city recognition from National Geographic as one of the nations’s best hiking cities. The listing in the online story (available on the Trails and Desert Preserves page of the Parks and Recreation Department website at phoenix.gov/parks) refers to South Mountain Park/Preserve as “a veritable wilderness in the city.  Phoenix’s desert preserve system is more than 30,000 acres and has close to 200 miles of trails through classic Sonoran Desert. Close to 700,000 city residents visited a Phoenix desert park or preserve in the past year.  Imagine exploring untouched desert lined with majestic saguaro and cholla cactuses, home to coyotes, great horned owls and gila monsters — all just minutes from downtown Phoenix. It’s no surprise Phoenix is one of National Geographic’s best hiking cities. And it’s not just natural beauty. Look for signs of ancient civilizations in rock art petroglyphs left behind by the city’s prehistoric inhabitants. With dozens of trail access points throughout the city, it’s easy to make time for a hike, run or ride. There’s a trail for everyone, from busy, arduous summit climbs to secluded, meandering valley walks, and everything in between. Most trail parking areas are open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

New Performing Arts Charter School Opening in the South Mountain Community

EAGLE College Prep is launching its second school in the South Mountain Village community August 1, 2011. Modeled after the highly successful college prep charter school, EAGLE College Prep Harmony emphasizes college prep at an early age, the performing arts, and the integration of technology in every classroom.

In a time where the arts are being drastically cut from schools, Harmony scholars will engage in two performing arts specials each day. These classes include a variety of movement classes, choral, and piano lessons. In addition, students will utilize the technology pods included in every classroom to develop, maintain, and master math and reading skills.

EAGLE Harmony is different than your typical elementary school. Students will participate in common core classes including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, in addition to actively participating in the arts and technology. Students will attend school from 8:00am-4:00pm, with shortened days on Wednesdays. These hours are important to its scholars, because it is EAGLE’s mission to prepare all students for college and their future. The classes are academically rigorous, creative, hands-on, and dedicated to college preparation for every child.

EAGLE Harmony will serve all learners in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade in its first year and add a grade each year until 8th grade. For more information about the school visit the website: www.eagleharmony.org. Enroll now, and begin the school year August 1st.

EAGLE College Prep’s Student Council hosted a Flagpole Dedication on Thursday, June 7th at 9:00am.  Student Council President Gunner Williams gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of the flag honoring our country.  He shared the story of how the Student Council arranged for the flagpole to be purchased and installed.  The student council made it a priority to get a flagpole for EAGLE College Prep this year.  To raise funds to purchase the flagpole, Student Council held fundraisers and sought donations.  At the beginning of the year, the PTA donated $100 to the student council.  This allowed them to purchase materials for a candy gram sale.  They raised $300 from the candy gram sale and $225  from a SMENCIL (smelly pencil) fundraiser.  The Student Council officers gave a presentation to the school’s governing board.  Members of the governing board listened to their presentation and were so moved by the character of the students that individual members collectively donated $70.  With the final $200 donation from the Silver Pony Saloon, Student Council was able to purchase a 35 foot pole.  Installation was donated by Jason Williams and his crew from Kelly’s Reload.   The VFW donated the flag that will be raised daily outside on the flagpole.  Student council historian Lily Redner and her family also donated a flag to the school.  The flag is one that was raised on 9/11 at the White House.  This flag will fly inside building 2.   EAGLE College Prep is very proud of its student council’s demonstration of citizenship.

Some more good news, on Wednesday May 4th. yours truly, got another award, this time for being “Human”.  Once again I did not know that folks got these kinds of awards, but it is nice to know, so if anybody doubts weather or not I am human I can show them my Certificate.  The nice folks at South Mountain Community College gave me the award for the 2010-2011 Humanitarian Awards, my fellow awardees were Barbara Kutnick, Bill Zepeda, Buddy Cheeks and Sian Proctor.   My congratulations go out to all of them.

I have had folks ask me what is happening in our Village’s, and the answer is “not much”.

“Well Folks; Try to make at least three people smile each day.”

The South Mountain Village Clean & Beautiful (SMVC&B) would like to hear from you if you would like to have us assist you in cleaning up your neighborhood or would like to join us in a clean up. Once again I ask you, “Have you picked yours today?” Trash that is? I do not like to keep repeating my self, but I had another phone call about Graffiti and how bad it is. In the past I have ran several stories about the City of Phoenix Graffiti Busters program. Please folks call in the Graffiti as soon as you see it. I know it is taking a little longer for the Graffiti Busters to clean it up, but with City Of Phoenix budget cuts and all we need to have a little patience. If it is in your neighborhood, maybe you could call and get the paint and paint it over yourself or with your Block Watch. The number is (602 495-0323). So far the South Mountain/Laveen Village’s Festival Committee has had a very successful year. Out Haunted Hayride, Parade, Fair, Faith Day and Story Telling Time were very successful. We would like to again thank Terri Minard and the Wal Mart Super Store at 35th Avenue and West Southern Avenue for their generous sponsorship of our events this year. We are looking for volunteers to help with our events in 2009 please contact me for details. Check out our Restaurant Review this month. “Maryln’s” has great food and prices. For information on the South Mountain Village Planning Committee agenda please contact our City of Phoenix Planner, Mrs. Chris Hood at 602-261-8727. To inquire about developments in the South Mountain/Laveen Village please e-mail or call George at (602-243-3162).

Now that the elections are over we would hope that the politicians and proposition folks will make sure they get the signs down. They have 10 days from the election and I am still seeing signs around town. Phoenix residents are reminded that posting signs on utility poles, sidewalk or anywhere else in the public right-of-way is not allowed by city ordinance. The right-of-way varies widely throughout the city but generally include streets, curbs, median traffic lights, utility poles and unimproved shoulders of streets up to private property and generally 2 feet beyond sidewalks. Illegal signs can be dangerous if they become loose and fall in the street or hit a pedestrian, or if they block the view of motorists or pedestrians. And those responsible could be fined. For more information about illegal signs or to report a violations call 602-534-7100 or send an e-mail to nsd@phoenix.gov.
