Chamber (Sept 10)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on August 28, 2010

Some years ago, my wife and I had the opportunity to tour various historical sights in Philadelphia. It was inspiring to stand in the Independence Hall where the Second Continental Congress met and adopted the Declaration of Independence. One of the more memorable experiences was touring the Franklin Court, a museum dedicated to the life of Benjamin Franklin. While I had known Franklin was a respected statesman, author, and one of our Nation’s founding fathers, I was surprised to learn that he was also an inventor and the founder of the U.S. Postal System.

The author and publisher of Poor Richard’s Almanac, Franklin is also known for his words of wisdom. We are all familiar with his oft-quoted adages, “time is money” and “early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” However, I was particularly impressed by his saying, “Drive thy business or it will drive thee.”

I think a few important business lessons can be derived from this latter quote. First, if we are not in control of the direction of our business, market forces and outside influences will push our business for us – sometimes in undesired directions. Therefore, it is important for us to continually evaluate what we hope to accomplish professionally and to create a plan for achieving our goals.

Second, business owners often find that, having spent the time and money to market their businesses, they are too busy to do any further marketing once their businesses start to succeed. In an online article entitled The Benjamin Franklin Guide to Marketing Your Business Online, Brian Clark commented on this problem:

In the very short term, you won’t feel it, but if you’re trying to grow a real business and avoid the feast or famine cycles that are inherent when engaging in marketing only when hungry, the content should never stop. If you’re looking to grow, make sure you bring on people that can do the things you shouldn’t be. You might be surprised to find that your marketing is the last thing you should hand over to someone else.

Continual marketing is the key to assure that our businesses stay profitable and successful.

Third, many people start businesses because they seek the freedom associated with being their own boss and working their own hours. However, most people discover that a good deal of time and effort is required for the business to be successful. It is tempting to spend most of our waking hours in these pursuits. If we are not careful, we could find that our efforts toward pushing our businesses to succeed come at the cost of other important relationships and activities in our lives. Another Franklin quote is illustrative: “Love doesn’t make the world go ’round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.”

SOUTH MOUNTAIN-LAVEEN CHAMBER

A word from the Board Chair

It’s August, it’s hot, and even in this heat, I’m thankful everyday that I get to see the beauty of South Mountain and the amazing variety of wildlife that has returned all along The Rio Salado Habitat

Recently, in this column, we’ve focused on the big projects that are planned and underway, throughout South Mountain and Laveen.  Now, I’d like to mention some of the smaller developments that are bringing more retail goods and needed services to our communities.

  • Laveen Medical Pavilion will be opening in September, at 35th Avenue and Southern with a new Health Clinic to serve the family health needs of local residents.
  • Laveen Primary Care, a private practice providing family and specialized medical services, is now open at 76th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Rd.  Dr. Richard J Waldrop, Board Certified Family Physician., has a special focus on serving Families residing in Laveen, where he previously officed..
  • LA Fitness in Laveen will open early November with a larger facility than their location in Ahwatukee.  This is a tremendous addition to the Laveen area, located just west of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road.  You can learn more by visiting their preview center next to Leslies Pool Supplies in Laveen.
  • Also in Laveen, at 51st Avenue and Baseline Road, be sure to visit and taste the homemade ice cream at Scooptacular, next to Starbucks.  It’s fantastic!
  • Meanwhile, on South Central Avenue, north of Southern, you’ll find a new Nestle Water retail water store that carries several varieties of water at prices you won’t find anywhere else.
  • The newest restaurant in South Mountain, La Cucina Italiana opened last month at Dobbins Road & Central Avenue.  They serve traditional Italian Fare which must make us one of the last valley area communities to finally have our own local traditional, family, Italian restaurant.
  • Also, opening very soon will be a new restaurant in The Secret Garden at 2501 E. Baseline Road, called “The House at The Secret Garden.”  Award winning chef Dustin Christolfo is the new proprietor.  The new enterprise is affiliated with highly successful Santa Barbara Catering Co.

Yes, the unique and beautiful South Mountain area continues to move forward.  There are many other things to feel positive about in the Laveen and South Mountain Villages.  As residents of South Mountain, you need to get out, look around, and get involved with activities and new opportunities which continue to improve our quality of life here in South Mountain.  Remember to think local first when going out for a meal or to shop!

SMLC (April 2010)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on April 3, 2010

Another Spirit of South Mountain Awards Dinner has come and gone.  I am happy to report that the 2010 event was our best attended to date.  It was great to mix and mingle with you and to celebrate many of the wonderful things taking place in the South Mountain and Laveen communities.

Although all award nominees deserve recognition for their worthwhile endeavors this past year, I wanted to take a moment and recognize this year’s award recipients in the following five categories:

  • Education – Phoenix Collegiate Academy – With the assistance of concerned parents and community members, Rachel Bennett spearheaded the opening of the Phoenix Collegiate Academy in July 2009.  The Academy has a mission to prepare students to succeed in college and to be leaders in the South Mountain community.
  • Local Government – U.S. Vets – Esther Thomas, V.A. Liaison Homeless Services – Giving of her time and resources, Esther Thomas serves as a liaison in assisting homeless veterans in the South Mountain area with job training and life skills.
  • Nonprofit Agency – Tigermountain Foundation – Darren Chapman – The Foundation’s mission includes promoting community involvement, fostering neighborhood cohesiveness and providing job training through the maintenance of community gardens.  Darren’s life story is inspirational and his involvement in our communities has helped numerous individuals develop a sense of purpose and turn their lives around.
  • Local Business – Cigna Medical Group/South Mountain Office – The South Mountain Office structured its client care services to address health problems, including diabetes treatment and patient immunizations, that are prevalent in our communities.  In support of these efforts, the South Mountain Office raised more than $110,000 in 2009 for diabetes and prenatal education.
  • Individual Volunteer – Honorable Cody Williams – Currently serving as the South Mountain Court Justice of the Peace, Judge Williams has a long history of dedicated public service in the South Mountain community in many capacities including serving on the Phoenix City Council and as chair of the Greater Phoenix Black Chamber of Commerce.

Many thanks to all who organized, participated in and attended the event.  I can’t wait to see what next year’s nominees will accomplish.

We are also pleased to announce that the Shootout at South Mountain, the South Mountain Laveen Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament, will be held on Tuesday, May 4 at Vistal Golf Club.  Foursomes are filling up quickly.  To book your tee time or to learn more about the benefits of a Chamber membership, contact our Executive Director, Steve Glueck, at steveg.smlchamber@cox.net.

SML Chamber (Mar 2010)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on February 23, 2010

A Word From The President

Momentous events continue to shape our South Mountain and Laveen communities.  Like you, I watch with growing concern the efforts by our government leaders to make drastic cuts in order to balance shaky budgets.  Particularly of interest are the ongoing discussions that the City of Phoenix intends to cut approximately 180 sworn public safety jobs (i.e., police and firefighters) as part of a broader $140 million in budget reductions to be implemented through fiscal year 2011.

The effect of our current economy continues to ripple down to each of us at an individual level.  Eventually we will feel the effects of a decreased police presence in our neighborhoods.  All of us have noticed, or will soon notice, condensed business hours at our libraries, Department of Motor Vehicle offices closing, and swimming programs being canceled.

I highlight these issues not to criticize our elected officials – difficult times require our leaders to make difficult, and often unpopular, decisions.  I mention these challenges to stress that although we face challenges, the South Mountain and Laveen communities have overcome difficulties in the past and I believe that we can ride out this current economic storm as well.

We see our South Mountain Laveen Chamber of Commerce membership increasing from month to month.  I emphasize this fact, not to pat ourselves on the back, but to point out that our business leaders are taking an interest in the future of our communities and that our local economies continue to grow.  Some of these new members are existing businesses that have been in our communities for some time but many are new businesses that have decided to locate in our midst.

There is other good news coming out of our communities.  Thanks to a large multimillion dollar contribution from The Kroc Foundation and thanks to the tireless efforts of many of you, on March 29, 2010, the Salvation Army is set to break ground on the new Phoenix South Mountain Youth Center.  Built to replace the existing building located at 13th Street and Broadway Road, the 140,000 square foot center is expected to serve at least 1,600 South Mountain kids daily.  When opened in 2011, the center will be the third KROC – Salvation Army Youth Center opened nationwide with more such centers to follow.

In addition, we recently witnessed the grand opening of the Boston Nail Salon in the previously vacant Laveen Village Marketplace located on the northwest corner of 35th Avenue and Baseline Road.  We can hope that this is a harbinger of other stores to soon open in the area.

SML Chamber (Jan-Feb 2010)

Posted by South Mountain Villager on February 9, 2010

South Mountain / Laveen Chamber

A Word From The President

The South Mountain Villager encourages us to “Take Pride in the South Side.”  Indeed, there is much in the South Mountain and Laveen communities of which to be proud.  The South Mountain – Laveen Chamber Spirit of South Mountain Awards Dinner, which will be held on February 25th, provides one opportunity for us to showcase our rich communities and the individuals who live and work among us.

Last year, the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber recognized several individuals and businesses that made a difference including Dr. Josephine Pete, Ingried Lowman, Michael Nowakowski, Hacienda Health Care and MRM Construction Services, Inc.  Each award recipient demonstrated great pride and dedication to improving the lives of others.

In addition, each year the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber honors an officer of the year from Phoenix Police Department’s South Mountain Precinct.  At last year’s award ceremony, I was touched by the presentation of the officer of the year award.  Commander David L. Faulkner recognized two officers who went above and beyond the call of duty – one of whom, Officer Shane Figueroa, was tragically killed in the line of duty.  It was a moving experience to mingle with Officer Figueroa’s family.

Please come join us again this year as we pay tribute to those who make a difference in the South Mountain and Laveen communities.  For more information on the Spirit of South Mountain Awards Dinner, log onto the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber’s website at http://www.phoenixchamber.com/smlc/.  I look forward to seeing you on the evening of February 25.

SMLCC Sept 09

BlaineSearleFinally, there’s some good news on the economic front; this, in a day and age where “good news” is measured by unemployment rates increasing at a less-than-expected rate.  Published in August, a survey of the Wall Street Journal’s top economists found that 57% believe the recession is already over and another 23% believe the economy will make a turn into positive territory in the next month or two.

To be sure, this economic news is small comfort to those businesses that are struggling.  I have visited with many of you and have learned firsthand of the many challenges you face in keeping your businesses afloat.  Some of you are forced to make difficult decisions as you suffer from increased costs and decreased revenue.  However, if you are looking over your books and trying to decide where to trim the budget, remember the quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson: “The man who stops advertising to save money is like the man who stops the clock to save time.”

As you plan your business strategy going forward, I would encourage you to join the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber of Commerce.  Members have the opportunity to participate in business and networking activities designed to help you connect with prospects and partners, learn valuable business strategies and grow your business.  These include:

  • Business for Breakfast gatherings – Held the second Wednesday of each month, from 7:15 until 8:30 a.m. at the Bougainvillea Golf Club, this events brings members together to enjoy great food while mingling with potential business prospects.
  • Leads Club – Held each Wednesday, at 7:15 a.m. at The Raven Grill at the Raven Golf Club, this provides an opportunity for members to share business leads.  Contact Steve Glueck at steveg.smlchamber@cox.net for details.
  • Business After Hours Mixers – To be held the third Tuesday of each month, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at different business and nonprofit locations in the community, these mixers have been reintroduced to allow member to mix and mingle with potential business prospects.  Click on the events calendar link at http://phoenixchamber.com/SMLC/index.html for more details.
  • Brown Bag Lunch and Learn – To be held at the South Mountain Community College, these 60 minute sessions have been newly designed for members to learn about practical issues facing small and medium-sized businesses.  Details to follow.

In addition, members may attend all of the events and activities sponsored by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, with which the SMLCC is affiliated.

We invite all current SMLCC members to take advantage of your membership by joining us for these marketing events.  For those considering a membership in the SMLCC, we invite you to attend these events as a guest to see firsthand that joining the SMLCC has its privileges.

Chamber July 09

Posted by South Mountain Villager on July 8, 2009

Five years ago, I moved from Seattle to Phoenix to be Development Director at Arizona Lutheran SMLClogoAcademy—a Christian high school on 27th Avenue and Southern. My family and I bought a new home nearby—on 30th Avenue, just off Baseline. At that time, the communities of South Mountain and Laveen were in the throes of unprecedented development. Cotton fields and cow pastures were fast becoming residences, stores and restaurants.

I remember meeting new Chamber chair Jeffrey Garza Walker. I wanted to meet people. I wanted people to know about my great school. Jeffrey’s answer was immediate. “Get involved with the Chamber.” I took his advice.

Fast forward five years. I have never regretted that decision. Over the past five years, I’ve meet and collaborated with hundreds of people who provide a valuable service to South Mountain and Laveen. Some are entrepreneurs and developers. Others are small business owners, educators, administrators, and church leaders. Still others are community servants. Though those relationships, my school is firmly planted on South Mountain/Laveen map. And through those relationships, our community is shaping up to be a better place—a place where people want to live, do business, and send their children to school.

A Chamber membership is much like going to school. It can be whatever you make of it. Now, more than ever, with a topsy-turvy and unpredictable economy, you need to get involved in the Chamber. That’s because, now, more than ever, there’s so much to make of it. Do you need referrals? Name recognition? Partnerships or good advice? More business? The South Mountain/Laveen’s ownership in this community, combined with our affiliation with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, puts a world of possibilities at your doorstep. There’s everything to gain and nothing to lose. Come and get connected!

It’s been a privilege to serve this past year as the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber board chair. It is now an equal honor to pass the baton over to your next chair—Mr. Blaine Searle. Blaine lives in our community and serves as an attorney at Gust Rosenfeld. Under his leadership, our chamber will continue to serve you and identify strategies to make this community the best in Phoenix.

Dec 08′ SML Chamber of Commerce

Posted by South Mountain Villager on November 19, 2008

A Word from the President… John Sebald

South Mountain Laveen Chamber

South Mountain Laveen Chamber of Commerce

I’ve heard it said that whatever a community values—it celebrates. In that spirit, South Mountain and Laveen are gearing up for a serious celebration!

Thursday, February 26 marks the third annual Spirit of South Mountain Awards. This banquet has become a signature event of the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber of Commerce, and for good reason. This is a night to celebrate individuals and organizations that epitomize our vision for a safe, healthy, and prosperous community.

The Spirit of South Mountain Awards banquet honors individuals and organizations in five categories: Local Business, Non-Profit Agency, Local Government Agency, Education/School Administrator, and Individual Volunteer for 2008.

I need your help to make sure that this celebration is “over the top.” Here’s what I want you to do. Think of an individual, organization or business that you think epitomizes the best of South Mountain and Laveen. (If the organization or business happens to be yours—that’s fantastic!) Then, go to www.phoenixchamber.com/SMLC and download a nomination form. Or, you can contact our chamber’s executive director, Steve Glueck, at sglueck@phoenixchamber.com or 602-402-6086. Steve will help answer questions and coach you and/or the organization of your choosing through the nomination process. But hurry! Nominations must be submitted no later than Friday, January 23!

Three finalists per category will be selected prior to the banquet. One individual, organization or business per category will be named the 2009 recipient at the banquet awards ceremony. You won’t want to miss another highlight of this event as we salute the men and women of the South Mountain Precinct, and present the Precinct’s 2008 Officer of the Year Award.

The Spirit of South Mountain Awards Banquet will be held in the heart of South Mountain—at the beautiful Secret Garden just east of 24th Avenue and Baseline. Chamber board member, Jennifer Gallagher, is the chairperson for this year’s event. SRP is our presenting sponsor. To register for a plate or table, contact Steve Glueck.

Thanks for helping ensure that our 2009 is an outstanding celebration of everything great in our community! Take pride in the south side and begin completing your nomination today.

A Few Words From the "South Mountain Laveen Chamber of Commerce"

Posted by South Mountain Villager on September 8, 2008

Hello, this is Steve Glueck sitting in for John Sebald, the 2008-09 board chairman for the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber of Commerce. We are all celebrating John’s new position as principal of Arizona Lutheran Academy in Laveen. John replaces outgoing principal Dan Johnson, who accepted an opportunity to become the president of Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Speaking of celebrations, the Roosevelt School District No. 66 continues to trend upward in academic achievement, as measured by the most recent Arizona Learns results. That helped to influence a decision last month by the Arizona State Board of Education to not proceed with its takeover of the district.

The entire community benefits from academic excellence in our local schools. It impacts the quality of our future workforce, the future growth and sustainability of neighborhoods, and the quality of life issues that determine the future health of our South Mountain and Laveen villages.

We continue to welcome the new retail and commercial development additions to Laveen and South Mountain. Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, PETsMART, Verizon Wireless, Chipotle and Sundance Studios are now open at the new Marketplace at South Mountain, located on the southeast corner of 24th Street and Baseline Road, next to The Secret Garden Event Center and Vintage Market restaurant.

Also, in Laveen, the Hat Rack Pub is now open in the new retail center on the northeast corner of 35th and Southern avenues. Just down the road, the commercial retail center at the corner of 35th Avenue and Baseline Road is nearing completion, and its new tenants will begin opening in October. In addition, the new Safeway store at the southeast corner of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road will open soon. And, don’t forget there are more retail and commercial additions to explore on Southern Avenue at 51st and 35th avenues.

At 7227 S. Central Ave., Raptor Guitars will host a Halloween Musical event, featuring a stage with local bands, games and treats for the kids, and a variety of food and prizes. Contact George Contreras at 602-510-6461 for more information.

Also, Pepi’s Pizza and owner Mark Messner will welcome a new addition, as Luxor Jewelers opens a new location inside the restaurant. This unique and innovative pairing of businesses is the result of “outside-the-box” thinking by Pepi’s owner Mark Messner and Luxor’s David Fierro. Would you like some diamonds with that pizza?

The Greater Phoenix Chamber and your South Mountain /Laveen Chamber chapter will host the greater Phoenix Real Estate & “Economic Outlook 2009” Breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore on Sept. 24. For more information about events, activities and membership in the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber of Commerce, please contact me at 602-402-6086 or sglueck@phoenixchamber.com.
