DR. KEN ATWATER NAMED PRESIDENT OF HILLSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Dr. Ken Atwater has been selected as the new President of Hillsborough Community College based in Tampa, Florida.
Atwater, who had served as President of South Mountain Community College (SMCC) in Phoenix, Arizona since 2001, will assume his new duties July 1, 2010.
Hillsborough Community College serves the residents of Hillsborough County, Florida, including the cities of Tampa, Brandon, Riverview and Plant City. The college oversees seven campuses throughout the county, and serves an enrollment of more than 45,000 students.
“I am honored to be selected as President of Hillsborough Community College, and to succeed Dr. Gwen Stephenson, who has done an outstanding job in leading this highly-respected institution,” said Atwater.
Prior to his arrival at SMCC in 2001, Dr. Atwater served as Vice President for Student Services at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan. For three years prior to his position at Kellogg, he served as Vice President and Dean of Students at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. He has also been Vice President for Student Development Services at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, South Carolina; and Dean of Students at Catonsville Community College in Catonsville, Maryland.
Atwater earned his Ph.D in Higher Education (with a focus on community colleges) from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois in 1989. He earned a Master of Science degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1978 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech/Theater and Sociology in 1977, all from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.
“I believe my 25 years in community college administration and ten years as a college president has prepared me well for this challenge, and I am greatly looking forward to it,” Atwater said.
South Mountain Community College, this year celebrating its 30th anniversary, is one of the ten Maricopa Community Colleges. For additional information about the college, visit http://southmountaincc.edu.

Life Care Center (July 2010)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on June 19, 2010
Life Care Center of South Mountain Receives Five Star Rating
We typically associate five stars with a movie we can’t miss, a hotel that is a must stay or a top notch restaurant. The stars serve as an indicator of quality but what does it mean for your health and how can it help you to choose the right extended care facility for yourself or a loved one? The star rating system has been applied by Medicare to help consumers and care givers rate and compare extended care facilities and is a vital tool when deciding on the right place that can provide the appropriate level of care.
The Five Star rating is based on three specific areas, Health Inspections, Staffing and Quality Measures. Data from these areas is collected and rated to provide consumers with a “snap shot” of a facility.
Health inspection results are a comprehensive collection of data, based on 180 different items that describe and cover all aspects of care and processes in a nursing home. This data is collected by onsite trained inspectors that visit the facilities annually. These objective inspectors, survey residents, check the quality of care and inspect medical records on each visit to gather data and then apply it to the five star rating.
Staffing is also considered in the five star rating process and basically takes in to account the ratio of staff to residents and how many of the staff are registered nurses. This area includes the ability of a facility to adjust and customize staff based on level of care needed and actual number of people being cared for.
The last aspect of the Five Star Rating is the Quality Measures. These measures take an in depth look at ten important aspects of care, including how a facility treats skin ulcers, eating habits and how residents are dressed and cared for.
While it is not impossible for a facility to receive a five star rating it is very difficult. It requires a facility to give the highest standard of care in every aspect for an extended period of time. It is a benchmark and is indicative of a facility whose culture lives that standard. We here at Life Care Center of South Mountain are proud to say that we embody that standard of care and deliver with the same smile and consistency day after day, because we care. So when is Five Stars used for good health, when your choice is Life Care Center of South Mountain for your skilled and nursing home needs? Bring us your loved ones and we will deliver nothing but Five Stars.

SML Chamber (Jan-Feb 2010)
Posted by South Mountain Villager on February 9, 2010
South Mountain / Laveen Chamber
A Word From The President
The South Mountain Villager encourages us to “Take Pride in the South Side.” Indeed, there is much in the South Mountain and Laveen communities of which to be proud. The South Mountain – Laveen Chamber Spirit of South Mountain Awards Dinner, which will be held on February 25th, provides one opportunity for us to showcase our rich communities and the individuals who live and work among us.
Last year, the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber recognized several individuals and businesses that made a difference including Dr. Josephine Pete, Ingried Lowman, Michael Nowakowski, Hacienda Health Care and MRM Construction Services, Inc. Each award recipient demonstrated great pride and dedication to improving the lives of others.
In addition, each year the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber honors an officer of the year from Phoenix Police Department’s South Mountain Precinct. At last year’s award ceremony, I was touched by the presentation of the officer of the year award. Commander David L. Faulkner recognized two officers who went above and beyond the call of duty – one of whom, Officer Shane Figueroa, was tragically killed in the line of duty. It was a moving experience to mingle with Officer Figueroa’s family.
Please come join us again this year as we pay tribute to those who make a difference in the South Mountain and Laveen communities. For more information on the Spirit of South Mountain Awards Dinner, log onto the South Mountain – Laveen Chamber’s website at http://www.phoenixchamber.com/smlc/. I look forward to seeing you on the evening of February 25.

Good Folks June 09
Posted by South Mountain Villager on June 10, 2009
By George Young
This is a series of articles profiling some of the residents who live and work in the South Mountain/Laveen Village. In keeping with the original format of the Villager to only print the positive, we will attempt to acknowledge some of the great folks that have contributed so much to our lives and are hopefully role models for all of us. .
Well folks this month I am doing a rerun, sorry, I have been getting lazy, must be the heat, can’t seem to get motivated. My good friend Verna gave me an article she saved from The Star Newspaper from, February 27th. 1974. I know this a long time ago, but she just has all the historical stuff. Anyway I thought I would rerun this story because it will give those folks that have not lived in our Village for the last 35 years or so an idea of how long the folks have been advocating for change. I think I was about 10 years old at that time. This is in part, pretty much word for word, except where I inserted a few comments and the last paragraph that was too worn to make out.
We are part of Phoenix
“Recently, Regional Urban Design Assistance Team of the America Institute of Architects visited our city to make suggestions regarding the future development of metropolitan Phoenix. Three Southsiders attended the citizen’s forum in the City Council Chambers at which time the team headed by Lawrence Melillo, of Louisville, Kentucky, listened to various citizens groups.
Present from the South of the Salt (The Rio Salado used to be The Salt River) area were Sherman Bendalin, a member of the South Phoenix Citizens Planning Committee, Evelyn Adams, president of the Greater South Mountain Business Association, and the Reverend Kenneth Kilian, who represented the South of the Salt Planning Association. The following comments are excerpts regarding the future of the Southside area.
“In the development of metropolitan Phoenix, efforts should be made to bring it (The South Mountain Village) into the rest of the community. This has not been done, even in recent years as is indicated by the fact the Central Phoenix Plan stops on the north side of the Salt River, the governmental Mall is planned to only include the other side of the Rio Salado, and recent car pool plans stops at Washington Street.
We therefore make the following recommendations: Extend the Central Phoenix Plan to include the entire stretch of South Central Avenue leading to South Mountain Park. Also we urge the following: Creative development of the Rio Salado project: Renovation of South Central Avenue (including the installation of power lines underground, construction of side walks, modern lighting, updating of buildings, redesign of store fronts, sign control, and beautification); Economic development needs to be initiated. This should include a study of locations of industrial corridors, a study of how money does or does not come back into the Southside community, and a determination of what to do about pollutant industries such as sand and gravel operations along the river bed.
Southsiders also wish to preserve the South Mountain Park and the adjacent foothills. Open space is currently a resource which can provide beauty and balance to their community. Greater density should be established along the Salt River. “
God Bless Mr. Sherman Bendalin, Mrs. Evelyn Adams and Reverend Kenneth Kilian and God Bless The South Mountain/Laveen Village and God Bless America.

May 09 Chamber of Commerce
Posted by South Mountain Villager on May 7, 2009
Networking guru Dave Sherman is a good friend of the South Mountain/Laveen Chamber. His visit to the March 11 Business for Breakfast is one more “value added” reason that the Chamber is the place to get connected with the right people and to get your business on the right track. Dave shared three memorable observations about the economy. Since I was alert enough to take notes, I thought I’d share a few highlights with you.
- Make a resolution that, as of today, you will NO LONGER whine about the economy. Remove all whiney economy words from your vocabulary. Instead, start focusing on something you can control — YOUR ATTITUDE!
- Go on a network news fast. Most network news programs fill your head with the most negative, depressing, sensational events of the day. Turn to trusted newspapers, periodicals, or the Internet to find the relevant news you need. Leave the rest behind.
- Find something — ONE THING — today that can move your personal economy forward. That might be something as simple as making a call or scheduling an appointment. The bottom line is — DO IT! Find another thing tomorrow. DO IT!
Seeds for some of the world’s greatest fortunes have been planted during downturns or corrections in the economy. There have been three economic downturns in the past 30 years. Each one was followed by an upturn. Start priming your economic pump today.
Now, here are a few things I’d like you to put on your resolution list. (In other words — DO IT!)
- Make plans to attend the next Chamber Business for Breakfast. Write 7:15 a.m, April 8, Bougainvillea Golf Club on our calendar. This is a great chance to surround yourself with success-minded people and, in the words of a friend, “mix and mingle and make some jingle.” Go ahead — put it on your calendar now.
- Register for the 5th annual South Mountain Golf Shootout. This year’s event will take place on May 5 at the Raven Golf Club at South Mountain with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Complete details, including sponsorship opportunities, are available by contacting our executive director, Steve Glueck, at steveg.smlchamber@cox.net or 602-402-6086. A part of the proceeds of this event will benefit South Mountain Community College and the Girl Scouts Summer Camp Program. Be a hero. Take your most valued employees out for a great afternoon of community support and fellowship.
Finally, I’d like to congratulate Mr. Todd Sanders. Todd has been chosen by the Greater Phoenix Chamber Executive Board to succeed Katie Pushor as the new President-CEO of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, effective May 15. It’s a great choice and especially for our South Mountain/Laveen Chamber as Todd is a good friend of our chamber and community.

Giving Thanks for the Roosevelt School District and Business Luncheon
Posted by South Mountain Villager on November 19, 2008
There is nothing like a picnic to bring people together: The smell of good food, the sound of children singing and lots of interesting conversations. That was the theme for the Roosevelt School District and Business Luncheon, which was held on Thursday, November 13, in the Roosevelt School District Governing Board Room. More than 50 people attended representing various local businesses and community organizations.
The food was provided by Farmer’s Insurance, and Clarence Threatt cooked everything to perfection. Centerpieces were created by Linda Whiting’s students from the Valley View School. Mr. James Melberg led the Cloves Campbell School Choir in three pieces including an original work by the children: “Voices of Unity.” John Muscolino, Division Marketing Manager for Farmer’s Insurance, shared an inspiring video and words of encouragement in support of public
education: “Our kids are the future.”
Superintendent Dr. Mark Dowling explained several different ways for people to support the District. One of the easiest programs is the extracurricular Tax Credit. Arizona tax payers can contribute up to $400 to a school in the Roosevelt District and get a dollar-for-dollar reduction in their taxes. Another ambitious program plans to put “smart boards” in the classrooms. These interactive devices replace chalk boards and dust with slick computer graphics that can be displayed and manipulated by the children. It costs roughly $1,500 to purchase a smart board and install it into a classroom. Please contact the District if you are interested in getting more information about how to support our local schools.
Other top happenings in the Roosevelt School District include the New Superintendent’s Math Club with workbooks containing street and business names from our South Mountain community, V.H. Lassen School’s P.R. Club Restaurant, Professional Development Partnerships with Arizona State University and South Mountain Community College to “grow our own” teachers, Roosevelt District Employee Recognition Program, and continuing the Superintendent’s Reading Club.
Guests left with a very positive impression, and renewed faith in our children. “I had no idea Roosevelt was doing all of these terrific things,” noted one business woman. Another community leader remarked, “it is great to see the students excelling, so we need to support their achievements.” Last, one executive observed, “I would rather spend my tax money in Roosevelt Schools where I can see it making a difference in our community.” The whole event reminded several guests of Thanksgiving coming early, which gave everyone a good opportunity to practice being thankful.
